Tata Tiago NRG possible launch on September 12
Tata has announced that it will be holding a press conference on September 12, but they are remaining pretty tight-lipped about what they are going to announce. We have had one ear to the ground and suspect that it might be a crossover variant of the Tiago. The invite did have a surfboard on it, hinting at a more outdoorsy lifestyle.
SUVs have been doing brilliantly in terms of sales in the last few years, and everyone is capitalising on this trend. A lot of this has trickled down to smaller cars as well – with SUV-ish styling features being adopted on to more traditional hatchbacks. These crossovers have been around for a while – Volkswagen had the Polo Cross, Hyundai has the i20 Active, Honda has the WR-V and Fiat has the Urban Cross. Some have been hits, some have been misses.
More recently, Ford launched the Freestyle, a hatchback-crossover based on the Figo and has seen it do really well. Immediately after the launch in April, Ford noted a bump in its domestic sales, with the Freestyle being its second-best selling product after the Ecosport. It sticks to the crossover formula of butch looks, additional ride height and more cladding and comes in at a good price.
Going by the success the Freestyle has received, it is highly likely that Tata has its own crossover in the works. What you can expect from a Tiago NRG is additional black cladding along the sides of the car, reworked bumpers, skid plates and possibly new wheels on the outside. The interiors may get tweaks in terms of the colours used. Now whether this will be just a cosmetic job is yet to be seen – it should retain the same drivetrains as the Tiago. However, we will only know if the suspension has been reworked for additional ground clearance at the time of launch. If the car is launching at all, that is.
