Unveiled: Toyota Yaris

Toyota has finally entered the segment is so desperately wanted to be. At the on-going Auto Expo, the Japanese car maker finally revealed the full-sized Yaris sedan for India. The car will rival established cars such as Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz among others.

The car is sold globally as the Yaris and Vios. The latter is a South-East Asia nomenclature which Toyota-Kirloskar isn't using for India, because it says the Indian version is a global one.

The Yaris is marginally longer than its rivals although it looks bigger. The front is a more gimmicky version of the Corolla's with a sort of floating logo and slim grille. The bumper is huge though and makes the car look big. The silhouette is sleek. The same can be said about the rear. It looks typically Toyota it isn't overly exciting but neither is it too staid. Thankfully. It is an easier design to accept.

Inside is where the car gets more impressive. It feels solidly built in the way the door closes and the plastics feel. The seats are plush and well bolstered. Obviously, space is not an issue and even the rear floor is fully flat. Toyota knows that a lot of customers of cars in this segment are chauffeur driven too so has made sure that the rear is well-appointed. A nice touch is a roof blower for the rear. Overall, the rear is nicely done.

At the front, the steering is large and chunky and the dashboard is clean and simple. It uses the same multimedia system from the Corolla Altis. While the equipment list cannot match what a Verna offers, it still seems enough.

Under the hood, there will be a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to a 7-speed CVT box (with paddle-shifters) or a 6-speed manual, similar to the larger Corolla. However, it is going to offer both gearbox options across the range. Apart from that, seven airbags and disc brakes all around will also be stand out feature.

While the car has been revealed at the Auto Expo, Toyota hasn't decided the price yet. But bookings will begin in March. We will drive the cars before that and give you a comprehensive review. Expect it to be priced at ?10-14 lakh range.
