Review: Audi A6 Special Edition

All of us always find new occasions to celebrate. This time, Audi has a real big reason to pop some champagne bottles. And a special one, too. Audi's sales figures in India have gone past those of its other German rivals – Mercedes and BMW. In the first quarter of this year, Audi sold 2616 units in the country, overtaking the competition by a big margin.

On this special note, Audi is celebrating its success with a special edition of a car that has played a very important role in bringing the company to where it is now - the A6.

So what’s special in the A6 Special Edition, you ask? Visually and mechanically, nothing. Audi has thrown in more features in this spec and most of these new features are an effort to make your back-seat travel more comfortable.

This one gets the adaptive air suspension, four-zone air conditioning, Drive Select like the regular model, but in addition to that, it also rear side airbags, Bose sound system, MMI touchpad and co-driver’s seat control at the back. All of this, keeping in mind that the A6 will mostly be chauffeur-driven in our market unlike in Europe.

The seats of the A6 Special Edition are draped in Valcona leather to give it that premium feel. Also, makes the rear-seat travel more special is the remote control that controls everything, from satnav to radio settings to the MMI system. With all of these additional features, Audi has tried to incorporate some bits that you could only find in the A8.

Under the hood, our test car came with a 2-litre diesel mill that puts out 174bhp and 380Nm of torque. All that power is sent to the front wheels via a CVT that has eight predefined ratios in case you wish to slot it into manual mode. It misses out on the quattro system like the other variants of the A6.

The Special Edition is also available with a 3-litre oil burner that’s good for 245bhp and 500Nm of torque that’s mated to a seven-speed S-Tronic transmission.

With the Drive Select, you can choose the way you want your steering, suspension and the engine to respond. But even in the Dynamic mode, the steering is on the lighter side and doesn’t weigh up as per expectations. The A6 rides on a suspension that’s tuned to be on the softer side. Although it helps in filtering the bumps well, it does demonstrate some amount of body roll in exchange.

With all features and creature comforts that rightfully come at a price, the A6 Special Edition will set you back by Rs 46.33 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), which is more than what you’d pay for the standard version. But what you end up with is the most feature-rich luxury sedan in its class from the current No.1 luxury carmaker of the country.

The verdict
The Special Edition borrows some features from the A8 to make it one of the most feature-rich luxury sedans in the country.
