Tata Indica Vista

Driving the Indica Vista 90, with its 1.4 ltr motor, was a pleasant experience. The clutch is progressive and true, engaging in proportion to pedal position across its full range of travel.

The extra 25 horses over the 1.2 Vista make a big difference, and the car doesn’t feel underpowered at all. The gearshift is not the best in the business, but is a vast improvement over earlier Indicas.

The engine is powerful but not as free revving as petrol engines should be. Having said that, the Vista does as well as any other 90bhp car in the segment. If you don’t expect Palio 1.6 levels of performance, you won’t be disappointed. It could do with fatter tyres, though. The 175mm tyres don’t look substantial enough and lose grip over loose surfaces rather easily.

If Tata really wants to make a sporty hatch, and that’s a big if, it needs to look at the just launched 114bhp turbocharged 1.4 Lenia. Better still, the 1.3 Multijet diesel with 90+bhp. I know recommending a diesel for performance over a petrol sounds wrong. Blame BS4 for that.
