Review: Toyota Liva

With the arrival of the Liva TRD – the sportier version of the Liva – Toyota has made some cosmetic changes to the regular Liva. It still gets the same 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel engines mated to the five-speed manual tranny that powered the earlier Liva.

The petrol engine makes 79bhp and 107Nm. It’s quite frugal and will run a good 16.5kpl on the highway and 12.3kpl in city limits. Up front, the refreshed Liva gets a new grille. It also gets reshaped ORVMs with integrated turn signals. At the back, the new-shape combi tail-lamps look sharper than the ones they replace.

Inside, it gets beige-and-black on the dashboard and upholstery. The beige looks a bit tacky, all-black is much better. The instrument cluster sports a new look. The driver’s seat gets height adjust. The top-end variant gets steering controls for the Bluetooth-enabled multimedia system.

The slight refresh and additional features have given the Liva an edge over its rivals. If you don’t care much for cornering ability but want a highly reliable hatchback, look no further.

The verdict
The Liva had already carved a niche for itself in the hatchback segment. This update gives it that additional boost to keep things fresh.
