The Auto Expo, in our opinion, is an exhibition of exciting cars, all put together under a single roof for one big reason – to tease us. Carmakers showcase machines that car enthusiasts have desperately wanted to see on our roads, but all that we get is a glimpse of our dream cars, shining bright under the spotlights, close enough to feast our eyes on, but far enough to touch it.
On most occasions, carmakers spill out very little in terms of launch details. But not this time around. Nissan was kind enough to let us have a go in one of the most deadly weapons it has created till date, and when a manufacturer does that, its certain that the model will make its India-debut soon. So there we were, at our very own Temple of Speed, the Buddh International Circuit, to drive this, the epitome of outrageousness, the Nissan GT-R.
Okay, so not many would have Nissan in their list of Top 5 sportcar manufacturers, but that will change once you get behind the wheel of a GT-R. If we were to throw some numbers at you, the GT-R has a 3.8-litre V6 under its hood that creates a complete riot – 543bhp and 632Nm of pulling force. And all of that torque is available for you to alter the earths axis by a few degrees when the tacho needle hovers between 3800-5200rpm.
No peaky power delivery, no surprises, just plain maddening rush. The GT-R is the only car in the world to have the engine at the front and the transmission at the back that distributes powers to all four wheels. This combination not only allows for better distribution of weight, but also lets the engineers mount the engine lower to the ground to get the centre of gravity low.
Nissan says the GT-R, with its styling, “is one of the most aerodynamic sportscars out there”. Its drag co-efficient is lower than that of a Porsche 911, a Ferrari 458 and a bullet. No, not the motorcycle, a real bullet.
If there's something that we'd like to give the GT-R a 21-gun salute for, it's the manner in which it takes off from the standstill. Its 0-100kph number will put supercars and even some hypercars to shame. It does the drill in 2.7 seconds. 2.7 seconds\\! Need we say more?
How does the GT-R manage to do that? Well, it has a potent V6 and a smart AWD system that doesnt believe in wheelspin or tyre shredding. Its job is to propel you towards the horizon at a rate that'll rearrange some of the organs in your body.
A racetrack may be the natural environment for a beast like the GT-R, but not the best place to test if it can handle the Great Indian Roads. So, we'll hold on to our verdict on the GT-R's ride quality, but one thing we can be very sure of is that when you are on a racetrack, like we are, the GT-R can put a smile on your face with the intensity at which it builds up speed on the straights and the enthusiasm it shows while attacking corners. The GT-R isnt really a precision tool, but in terms of being connected with the driver, like all the time, this is one Nissan that we'll put our money on.
Nissan cares a bit for practicality, too. And thus, it's squeezed in the rear seats. Now, if you think you and three of your buddies are going to be comfortable while on a drive, you're expecting too much. But if you must carry four at a time, you can.
The GT-R's cockpit is the perfect definition of fancy in Japan – lots of switches, lots of gauges telling you many things from engine temp, transmission temp, amount of turbo assist, so on and so forth. But you certainly can't call it the best place to be in if you talk sportscars. Don't get us wrong, there's nothing tacky in here, but feels a bit too plain Jane if you've been inside a Jaguar F-Type before.
For those of who have already started writing a cheque to buy yourself this beast, hold on your horses for a bit. The Nissan GT-R will be put on sale in India only in September this year and we expect it to be priced upwards of Rs 2 crore, ex-showroom. But trust us when we say this – it will be worth the wait and your hard earned money.
