Fiat launches the Abarth Punto
So, the day has finally arrived. Abarth is now within the reach of the people who actually aspire to own a car with the scorpion badging on its hood. You can walk into a Fiat dealership starting today and book yourself the Abarth Punto. Or, if you like to do things a bit differently, you could get yourself an Avventura 'Powered by Abarth'. Not Abarth Avventura, remember.
What's the difference, you ask. Well, for starters, the hot Avventura isn't shouting about its Abarth association - it discreetly divulges its hot hatch-cum-crossover aspirations via the 'Powered by Abarth' badging on its rear doors, and its 16-inch scorpion alloys (which look the business), while the Punto is festooned with red decals.
But there's more. Fiat India top gun Kevin Flynn explained how the Abarth brand has always been associated with hatches, and the Avventura is a very different kind of car altogether. The crossover doesn't get the tweaked suspension the Punto runs, but with the added power, it is now an even better long-distance partner, and, in Flynn's words, 'lovely to live with'.
There's a difference in power output as well. Despite sharing the same 1.4-litre T-Jet motor, the Punto makes 145bhp and 212Nm of torque, while the Avventura is down on the Punto by 5bhp and 2Nm. Doesn't sound like much, does it?

But the gap in their 0-100kph times is a bit much. Fiat claims the Punto will do the run in 8.8 seconds, while the Avventura will take a full 1.1 seconds more for the same.
Both cars are available in a single, fully-loaded variant, so there's all the kit you'd want\: ABS, airbags, disc brakes front and back, a Bluetooth-enabled stereo, keyless entry and more.
Fiat claims the Abarth Punto will do 16.3 kilometres to a litre of The Good Stuff, while the Avventura will run 17.1km. But that's not really what you'll be looking at when you buy this thing, is it? You will want to know how fast it really is, what's it like having a three-pedal hatch with so much power, and how good it makes the man at the helm feel. Luckily, we've driven it, so we're in a position to tell you about all those things.
And, of course, to the price. The Abarth Punto is yours for Rs 9.95 lakh, while the Abarth Avv... er, Avventura 'Powered by Abarth' also costs Rs 9.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). This makes the Abarth Punto the fastest car you can buy for this sort of money.
