Datsun Go launched, on sale now
It's been a long, long wait, this. Datsun packed up its bags and walked into the sunset in 1986, and now, after a lengthy 28 year-long break, has returned to the hustle-bustle of the car business with the introduction of its new hatchback, the Go, in India.Now, when we say 'new', we mean 'Nissan-Micra-Active-with-new-clothes'. Nissan owns Datsun, and the Go is a mildly-altered version of the small Nissan, positioned as a simpler, more pocket-friendly option. As we have described in our first drive and video review (below) - the Go is about as basic as budget hatches come. Available in three trim levels - D, A and T, the Go only gets aircon and body-coloured bumpers in the A, while, wheel covers, audio system with aux-in, power steering and front power windows are only added onto the T variant. The T also gets a smartphone holder with a USB charging point close at hand, and follow-me-home headlights - a feature previously unheard of in this segment - are standard across the range.
Safety features? Um, there are doors... and seatbelts, but ABS and airbags aren't available even as optional equipment.There is only one engine on offer for now, the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol as seen on the Micra Active. It makes 67bhp and 104Nm of torque, all of which is directed at the front wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox.The feature list may not look generous, but dimensionally, the Go offers more hatchback for your money than anything else with four wheels on sale right now. 3,785mm in length, 1,635mm in width and with a wheelbase measuring 2,450mm, it easily dwarfs the Hyundai Eon, and makes the Alto 800 look piddly.The most basic Go (D) is available for Rs 3.12 lakh, the mid-spec, A variant costs Rs 3.46 lakh, and the feature-heavy T is priced at Rs 3.7 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).
