If you’re just about to visit a Honda showroom and put down a deposit on the hot new CR-Z, hold your horses for a while. UMW Toyota Motors is all set to launch the Prius C hatchback in Malaysia. The car is already up on the company’s website and looks too good to be a hybrid. We mean, it looks more like a conventional car than the I’m-a-hybrid shouting Prius, and pretty sporty too.
The kit is impressive. It bundles a 1.5-litre inline four engine with 74bhp and an electric motor providing an added 61bhp of power. The combined output of the system is about 100bhp, pretty good for some zippy driving and, if Japanese test figures are to be believed, returning up to 40kmpl fuel efficiency. The Prius C is a full size hatchback, roughly the same size of a Toyota Yaris and was launched about a fortnight ago in Japan as the Aqua. Unlike the CR-Z, it has four doors.
Inside, you get fabric seats, automatic climate control, multifunction steering wheel, 2-din audio system with six speakers, 3.5-inch full colour TFT information screen and 7 airbags amongst other features. For all these, The price quoted on the website is RM103,990, all inclusive. To us, it sounds like a deal although UMW Toyota hasn’t disclosed any launch date. Head to the website to register for updates. Would you still go for the Honda CR-Z now, TopGear.commers? Post your comments below.
