Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has taken the covers off the new SL, which finally arrives in Malaysia after its international launch at the start of the year.
The model that is introduced here is the SL350 which gets a 3.5-litre V6 engine under its hood paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain develops 306hp and 370Nm of torque which translates to a 0-100km/h time of 5.9 seconds and top speed of 250km/h.
The body of the new SL is built almost entirely from aluminium, making it a 140kg lighter than its predecessor. Coupled with the German marquee’s BlueDIRECT technology, fuel consumption is rated at just 6.8 litres per 100km, 30% more economical than the outgoing model.
Apart from the technical underpinnings and features typical of a sports car of its range, the new SL is an ambassador of two world premieres in terms of technological innovation. First up is what Mercedes calls ‘Magic Vision Control’ which is essentially an advanced wipe/wash system whereby washer fluid is fed directly to the wiper blade lip via 44 washer jets integrated into the blades to avoid uneccessary splashing or spraying that may dirsupt the driver.
The other unique feature is the car’s ‘Frontbass’ system which makes use of the free spaces within the aluminium structure by turning these air wells into resonance spaces for the bass loudspeakers.
As with its predecessors, the new SL is a hard-top convertible whereby its roof can be retracted into the vehicle’s boot via an electrohydraulic mechanism to save space, all of which takes place in a matter of seconds. It also comes with Active Parking Assist, Pre-Safe Brakes and the Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND) among others.
The Mercedes-Benz SL350 is priced at RM898,888.00.
