If the picture is any indication, it’s basically showing of what’s underneath the updated CLS63 AMG for 2013. Yep, aside from the big news of the revamped and face-lifted E63 AMG, the engineers of Mercedes AMG also put the spot light on both the CLS Coupe and Shooting Brake AMG, albeit with a slightly dimmer brightness.

The highlights of the updated CLS63 are not visually, as it was done last year. Mechanically speaking though, the posher and curvier four-door coupe gets the same carryover of the latest drivetrains found on the face-lifted E AMG.

Powering the updated CLS AMG is the revamped twin-turbocharged 5.5L V8, now with standard horsepower figure of 557HP and 720NM of torque. Pre-update CLS63 AMG also had the same figure, but that was after the fitting of “Performance Package” option. With the increased power, acceleration is now faster with a quoted figure of 4.2 seconds from 0-100km/h (Coupe figure; Shooting Brake 4.3 seconds).

That, however, is the acceleration figure for the rear-wheel drive vehicle. As with the 2013 E63 AMG, the updated CLS also receives the performance-oriented 4MATIC all-wheel drive package that makes it run even faster on the straight line. The four-wheeled advantage also brings the acceleration rate down from 4.2 seconds to an SLS AMG-rivalling 3.7 seconds (3.8 seconds for the Shooting Brake). If that is not fast enough, you can also have your CLS Coupe and Shooting Brake in the S-Model, which has both the 4MATIC AWD and a 28hp power increase. Add all that and your CLS Coupe/Shooting Brake has pretty much outrun both the SLS AMG and SL65 AMG, with a figure of 3.6 seconds from 0-100km/h acceleration. The Shooting Brake variant, with a figure 0f 3.7 seconds, also outruns another fast super-estate, Audi RS6 which posted 3.9 seconds for the same acceleration figure.

The S-Models in particular represent the most attractive proposition in the segment,” notes Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “With its superlative power and torque ratings and the new performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the CLS 63 AMG is without parallel in its Coupé and Shooting Brake variants. Our AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine remains the most efficient series production V8 engine in the world. The new, customised model variants provide greater scope than ever for individual solutions.

All this great performance also comes with a good feeling, as the 5.5L AMG V8 is one of the most efficient performance eight-cylinder engines. The RWD Coupe/Shooting Brake coughs out 231/235 g/km of Co2 emissions, while the 4MATIC and S-Model Coupe/Shooting Brake coughs out 243/248 g/km of Co2. Mind-bendingly fast and mindfully green, too. Who wouldn’t like it?

Other similarities extend to the locking rear differential in the 4MATIC AWD and the optional AMG carbon ceramic brakes for the S-Model. To differentiate the S-Model from the standard model, the S-Model comes with red-painted brake calipers and a discreet “S”-badging just next to the “AMG” badge, two features that are also standard on the E AMG S-Model. Other standard features on the updated CLS63 AMG is the fitment of Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG sound system, and you can have your CLS Shooting Brake boot floor in an open-pore American Cherry wood,  a decorative fine wood traditionally used in superior interior design work, high-quality furniture and exclusive ship outfitting applications.

Now, all you have to do is to choose between the more aggressive-looking E63 AMG or the curvaceous CLS63 AMG.
