About 60 underprivileged children aged 16 and below from Serdang and Kajang were treated to a one-day friendly futsal tournament organized by employees of Chevron Malaysia Limited and Caltex retailers for a good cause.
The children who participated in the “Caltex-CSI Futsal Tournament” are enrolled in non-profit Education, Welfare and Research Foundation (EWRF)-Serdang’s Civil Society Intervention Program, an integrated outreach program to keep students from underprivileged and low-income backgrounds in school through activities like motivational courses, tuition sessions and weekly football clinics.
This event was helmed by Chevron employee, Chandra Mohan, with support from his team of volunteers and the project’s community partner EWRF-Serdang. It was aligned to Chevron’s unique social investment initiative, which offered employees a chance to drive their very own community engagement project aligned to social causes and partners they already support during their personal time.
The tournament pitted the talented and seasoned youngsters against mixed teams of Caltex and EWRF grown-ups. The heats ended-up with everyone being a winner, walking away with back-to-school stationery sets and victory hampers to share.
“The main purpose of the tournament was to reward these children who have worked so hard to stay in school and to maintain a positive attitude despite coming from challenging backgrounds.
“Chevron is committed towards social responsibilities that nurture young minds and improve their standard of living. Such initiatives by employees and retailers of Chevron are much appreciated and will continue to be encouraged and supported,” said Jeremy Oh, Country Chairman, Chevron Malaysia Limited.
Apart from having a great time at the tournament, the children were also given the opportunity to interact with people beyond their regular social sphere which could help to improve their exposure and communication.
