A-Class makes Malaysian debut

Posted on: June 27th, 2013

One of the most hotly-anticipated German hot hatches has finally arrived in Malaysia – enter the new A-Class. Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s latest offering comes in two variants – the A200 BlueEFFICIENCY and the A 250 Sport. The base A200 comes in at just below RM200k, making the A-Class the cheapest Mercedes you can buy new at the moment.

Contrary to the numbers in its name, the A200 derives power from a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine which puts out 156hp and 250Nm of torque. Likewise, the beefier A250 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit which delivers 211hp and 350Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. Apart from the different engine, the A250 also boasts AMG Sports suspension with narrower front and rear tracks presumably for increased agility.

Performance-wise, the A200 does 0-100 in 8.3 seconds to a top speed of 224kph. Expectedly, the A250 easily trumps those figures, doing the century sprint in 6.6 seconds with top speed rated at 240kph. As its name suggests, the A200 BlueEFFICIENCY prioritises fuel efficiency, with claimed consumption figures rated as low as 5.4l/100km. The sportier  A250 does not stray far off, returning a respectable 6.4l/100km.

Despite being the cheapest model in the stable, the A-Class is Mercedes through and through. It is loaded with innovative features such as Collision Prevention Assist, brake hold function, active parking assist, 14.7cm TFT colour display, 6-loudspeaker audio system and many more. The A250 gains AMG styling kit such as a diamond radiator grille, red accents inside and out, 18-inch AMG alloys and a sportier cabin upholstery.

The Mercedes-Benz A200 BlueEFFICIENCY is priced at RM198,888 while the A250 Sport, with its meatier engine, AMG styling and whatnot, tops the range at RM238,888. We could get a new range-topper in the future as Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has indicated that plans to bring in the ultimate A-Class, the incredibly quick 355hp A45 AMG, are in the works. Now that’s a Merc to look forward to.
