THOSE who are into hot hatches can now drool over the latest Renault Clio Renault Sport 200 Cup.

The Clio RS200 Cup is still based on the previous version but with slightly higher horsepower (3 more actually) and 20 per cent more torque, thanks to the revised 2.0L normally aspirated engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. With a weight-to-power ratio of 6kg/hp (the best in its class), you can expect neck breaking performance, if you know how to extract it from the engine. High revving normally-aspirated engines require skilled footwork, which serious drivers will have no problem with. In fact, this separates them from the wannabe boy racers.

Styling wise, the front end gets an F1-type aerodynamic splitter and a generously sized low air intake to cool down the engine. There are also front-wing air extractors and a rear diffuser, and all of these aero tricks cut down the Cd rating down by 0.02 to 0.75. Wheels are 17-inch aluminium alloy units with 215/45 R17 rubbers. Lurking between the spokes are Brembo calipers, ready to haul down the speed when needed.

Interior, the same Recaro bucket seats as one can found in the Megane RS250 greet you. Staring in front of you is the yellow rev counter that gives an audible and visible warning when you need to upshift – just like an F1 car. TC Euro Cars have specified the Malaysian Clio RS200 Cup to come with Cup Chassis option, which means it has uprated dampers and a closer ratio steering rack.
Compared with the garden variety Renault Clio III, the RS200 version has wider front and rear tracks (by 48mm and 50mm respectively).

The rear suspension has a reinforced deflection torsion beam which complements the front end’s independent steering axis system. What you get is a precise straight line performance and a sharper turn-in response.

Price is expected at RM199,000 but Top Gear Malaysia got to know that the model which will be sold here starting from April will be the special edition Angles and Demons series that comes with a matte gray colour scheme among others. If you have been waiting for this car, go down to Renault’s showroom in PJ (+603 – 7956 1044) and put down your booking fee!
