Audi’s A3 Gets The Boot
Posted on: March 27th, 2013

Audi claims that this sedan offers all of the strengths of the A3 model series – which used to be offered as a three- or five-door hatchback. The sedan is longer than the hatches, with a 2.64 m wheelbase and an overall length of 4.46 m. In comparison: The A3 Sportback has a 2.57 m wheelbase and an overall length of 4.29 m. With a width of 1.80 m, the A3 Sedan is 11 mm wider and 9 mm lower than that the Sportback.

To distinguish the sedan from the hatches, Audi had given the new car a mix of the classic three-box and the coupé silhouettes. They have given the sedan’s side surfaces more curves and flared the wheel arches more.

The four-door car also carries some design elements to further distance itself from its hatch cousins. Namely, the hood, bumpers, air intakes and its “singleframe” grille. At the rear, a spoiler is built into the trunk lid design. LED lighting technology is available as an option, but Audi will also be offering full-LED headlights right at market launch.

In Germany and Europe, the A3 engine line-up will consist of three four-cylinder engines:

Power Torque 0 – 100 km/h Top Speed Fuel Economy CO2 Emissions
2.0 TDI 150 hp 320 Nm 8.7 s 220 km/h 4.1 l / 100 km 107 g / km
1.4 TFSI 140 hp 250 Nm 8.4 s 217 km/h 4.7 l / 100 km 109 g / km
1.8 TFSI 180 hp 250 Nm 7.3 s 235 km/h 5.6 l / 100 km 129 g / km
2.0 TFSI (S3) 300 hp 380 Nm 4.9 s 250 km/h (limited) 6.9 l / 100 km 159 g / km

Depending on the engine, a manual six-speed transmission or the S tronic gearbox is offered.

The car’s a smart whizz too. You get electronic stabilization control which includes an electronic differential lock that brakes the inside front wheel very slightly to minimize understeering and improve traction. But for gizmos you can use to entertain yourself, the A3 sedan will come with a driver information system (DIS) with 3D imagery and MMI Radio system, or the optional MMI Navigation plus with 64 GB of storage, a DVD drive, voice control, a seven-inch-screen, Bluetooth and a touchpad for data input.

Other infotainment components include the Audi “phone box”, Bang & Olufsen sound system with 705 watts of surround sound, and LED light guides illuminate the woofer grilles in the front doors. What if you want a rolling modem? You can spec an optional 4G LTE network connection that works with Audi Connect. Optional driver assistance systems then? Adaptive cruise control, active lane assist and Audi pre sense basic – a system that can stop the car before you get yourself into trouble.

The A3 Sedan has two trim levels: Ambition and Ambiente. They both include an efficiency program, gearshift indicator and rest recommendation feature. In addition, the Ambition line has a sport suspension, 17-inch-alloy wheels, sport seats and the Audi drive select system. The Ambiente line adds a cruise control system, interior LED lighting package and rear parking assistant. In addition to these standard features, Audi also offers other individual comfort and convenience options – such as a panoramic glass sunroof, convenience key, auxiliary heating and xenon-based adaptive lights.

If performance is what you want, there will be a S3 Sedan. The S3 also will get a more aggressive look, lowered suspension, larger brakes and the Audi drive select vehicle dynamics system. Optional stuff include the Audi magnetic ride damper control system. Still not enough? We’ll see if they add an “R” in front…

Stay tuned for local information! We’ll update this story once we get the news.
