The new Audi RS4 Avant is the car that embroiders practicality of a five-door station wagon and performance since 1995, the year when the iconic RS 2 Avant was born.
Now, all you need to know about this 4.2-litre V8 powerhouse: 450 hp, 430 Nm.
The engine which is also found in the RS5 is married to a seven-speed S tronic and quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Results? 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. Top speed is 250 km/h or 280 km/h, depending on how naughty you are.
In view of the power output, this car is quite a frugal drinker, consuming less than 11 litres of fuel per 100 km. But why bother when you can have explosive starts with Launch Control and quattro permanent all-wheel drive, which can direct up to 70 percent power to the front or up to 85 percent to the rear. At default, power is split in a 40:60 ratio for a sporty rear-biased feel.
Handling all that power is a five-link front suspension and the self-tracking trapezoidal-link rear suspension. New to the RS4 Avant is a speed-dependent power steering that can make slight steering corrections when braking on surfaces with different amounts of grip. It can vary the steering ratio by nearly 100 percent and can automatically countersteer slightly at the limits.
Also new are the 19-inch wheels with optional 20-inch wheels with a polished, titanium-look, five-V-spoke design. The 365 mm front brakes now feature steel friction rings that Audi claims to effectively reduce tension, dissipate heat better and prevents temperature peaking. It also shaves roughly three kilograms of unsprung weight. Optional are 380 mm carbon fiber ceramic discs with six-piston calipers.
The Audi drive select driving dynamics system is among the standard equipment for the RS4 Avant. With three drive modes: comfort, auto and dynamic,it can even vary the sound of the exhaust system, double-declutching when downshifting in dynamic mode. If the car is equipped with an Audi navigation system, a largely driver-configurable custom mode is also available. Drive Select also can tweak the optional sport suspension plus with dynamic ride control (DRC), which can vary the damping characteristics with a choice of three settings available.
The interior of the RS4 Avant is spiced up with RS4 badges and carbon inlays, with brushed matte aluminium, Aluminum Race, black piano finish or a light stainless steel mesh available as options. Black leather and Alcantara is standard finish for the seats but one can have Nappa leather in either Black or Moon Silver accentuated with Stone Gray piping, bucket seats or luxurious, climate-controlled seats.
Audi offers a broad range of state-of-the-art driver assistance and communication systems, including the Bluetooth online car phone that connects to the Internet. Options for the luggage compartment, which offers up to 1,430 litres of cargo space, include a rail system with load securing set and a power hatch.
The Audi RS4 Avant will be available in Singapore from April 2013, prices starting from S$476,450 including COE. For more information, visit Audi Singapore’s website.
