The New Golf R

Let's start with fast numbers of this 2-litre monster. It makes 280hp, 380Nm and does 0-100km/h in 5 seconds and steams on to 250km/h.

Despite boasting such big numbers, there are several figures that shrank, notably, the fuel consumption which slips to 7.1L/100km and a carbon emission figure of 165g/km.

The new Golf R gets new lows thanks to the new dual fuel injection system which we first saw on the Mk7 Golf GTI. Transmission wise: A new Haldex 5 coupling aids the situation-based power distribution of the new Golf R's 4Motion all-wheel drive, which can direct almost all the power to the rear wheels.

More mechanical wizardry: The four-wheel electronic differential lock and the XDS+, which we found to be really handy in tight corners.

Behind the new “Cadiz” wheels, the suspension has been tweaked for more rigidity. The driving profile gets a new mode: Race – which sets the suspension damping to maximum and the gearbox as well as throttle response to 'dynamic'.

On the outside, the most distinct feature of the Golf R is the new twin dual-exhaust outlets and no fog-light option. That is simply because there is no space left after VW installed the enlarged air intakes.

The new Golf R is now on sale at S$236,300.
