Ultimate Peugeot revealed!
Pop quiz: what's the most powerful Peugeot ever? And how powerful is/was it?
Excluding the 908 Le Mans racer, of course. That'd be cheating. Any ideas? Anyone?
We'll put you of your misery. The most powerful Peugeot ever is this, the new 407 Coupe powered by a new 3.0-litre diesel.
Yes, the most powerful Peugeot ever is a diesel. It's 241bhp of powerful, to be precise, and will haul the big coupe to 62mph in 7.7 seconds. It also puts out a meaty 332lb ft of torque and will return 39.2mpg and just 189g/km of CO2.
Are we alone in being slightly surprised that there's never been a more powerful Peugeot, somewhere in the depths of the French marque's history, that somewhere, in among all those epic hot hatches, there's nothing that'd give this worthy but not-especially-exciting 407 a good duffing?
We'll take the most powerful Audi ever, ta. Or the most powerful Bentley.
Or the most powerful Aston...

Would prefer the Laguna Coupe to this. Slightly less powerful yet a lot better looking. And it has an Aston's rear end.

well what did you expect, nobody will buy a v8 peugeot if one existed.. unless the brand would start to do some serious image upgrading and start to pop out big sporty saloons with the quality to back them up, however this 407 coupe is the best peugeot ever, rear end just looks simply stunning and i was one signature away from buying one 2 years ago, but in the end i got scared about depreciation and stuff and went the german route, but i still have dreams about those red leather seats.. soo comfy :)

Wow, the fastest production Peugeot ever goes from 0-60 in 7.7secs! That's blindingly fast... For a cumbersome, fat-arsed front-drive coupé. It's not exactly challenging the GT-R for fastest 4-seater is it? Plus this looks like a gay shark.

@Turbomatic: there was a roadlegal 205 t16, but it had just 230hp. They needed 200 homologation roadcars to enter the WRC. Didn't sell at all, none of the roadgoing Group B cars ever did. I wonder what happened to them. Metro 6R4, anyone?

There's no point making it that fast, considering the amount of traffic the French has to go through everyday?

This car will go cruising speeds on the autobahn at just 2500 RPM, very good for the price, and that all that matters.

A bmw 330i coupe is way faster than this french fries though the beemer is heavier. I guess the beemers transmission is better than the peugeot. This engine is also available on the citroen c5 when i checked the car configurater. The can race to 62 mph in 7.9 seconds, only 0.2 seconds less than the 407.

the Peugeot 205 T16 had 197hp not 230hp sadly. The Group B racing versions had around 450hp though.

I don't like it on so many counts. First of all, Peugeot's fastest car (or fastest production car, if you're being pedantic) isn't at all fast. Yes it puts out an above-average torque, but that's a standard thing, given that this car has a diesel engine. The drivetrain of the car isn't disclosed but I think it's a bit safe to assume that the car has a FF layout, which really isn't the most ideal layout for a spirited drive. 241bhp is a bit of a joke considering the fact that it's THE fastest car the manufacturer has. Moreover, I think it's safe to assume that the diesel engine would be heavy, which will make the car front-heavy. That said, if you're driving this car on a track (or a deserted road, for that matter) often, tire management would, well, suck. Second, the look of that car. It's generally bulbous, which is a tad 90's. The fascia is ghastly, to say the least. That gills on the 3/4 front view of the car looks like a design afterthought. Pull your socks up, Peugeot!

1 thing to remeber tho... u need to look at this car in real life or take a test drive before judging it's weird looking face, cuz it just sucks on most pictures but looks completely different in real life .... even a aston looks like shiyt in pictures to be honest but u just wanna hump it on the street, ... i'm just sayin

a beautiful car. the reason there probably is no bigger engine is because the french tax rules are strict on large capacity engines, also this is just about enough for a front wheel drive car. i have owned diesel peugeots from the mid 80's and they are the best diesel engine in cars should you have to choose diesel. it may not be powerful but this car im sure is a good long distance cruser. and on bumpy bendy roads peugeots handle very well. and if it really bothers someone this car could easily be tuned to give more power. remember that soon peugeot have gave some indication of a new saloon to come in the next few years which will have a big engine and rear wheel drive to compete with the likes of the vw passat cc and be a much lower price

Having owned practically all the Peugeot range, which have given great service, followed by several high performance Mercs, Posches, including twin turbo and Aston DB7GT, which, I remember Jeremy said was his best car to date, I think many reviewers are talking out of their backsides. When did a sighting in the street, or a review qualify for so called expert feedback. Suggest we all get a bit less excited and see if it works in daily use, if it is prone to failure, how it handles, accelerates and all those good things. I look forward to it with interest.

This new coupe is the fastest Peugeot ever, but I feel little thrills and frills in it. Though she cruises smoothly with rock-like stability, she lacks some esprit found in the former-generation Pininfarina designed 406 Coupe. I feel the 407 coupe is rather cumbersome and lacking in agility. On the other hand, its styling lacks in lambent elegance, in my opinion. As for performance, she has commendable power and torque to post her 1.8tonnes body to maximum speed. The previous generation V6s, either 3.0V6 petrol or 2.7V6 diesel, could wind the 407 up to 155mph(250km/h), well above manufacturer data of 143mph(230km/h), but it required rather long straight and considerable time to reach it. And their fuel consumption was rather mundane, compared with Mercedes and BMW units of similar displacement. Such doldrums in performance has now become history, but I still wonder at heftiness of body, in common to whole Peugeot 407 series.
