How limited does a limited edition have to be?

This is the Porsche RS 60 Spyder, a posh version of the Boxster set to be unveiled at the Bologna motor show next month and limited to a mere 1960 examples.

That substantial yet curiously precise number is all because Porsche reckons the Spyder echoes its classic sports cars of the Sixties. Hence 1960.

Essentially a Boxster S with a bit more power and a whole lot of silver paint, the RS 60 Spyder is modelled on the original Type 718 - but we can think of some slightly less charitable inspirations for that lurid interior.

The output of the Boxster S's 3.4-litre flat-six has been bumped up from 295bhp to 303bhp thanks to a new exhaust system with twin tailpipes.

The Spyder also gets Porsche's Active Suspension Management - as found on the 911 GT3 and Cayenne GTS - which provides switchable damper settings, while spacer plates push the wheels wider in their arches.

Beyond that, the Spyder has received a proper tarting-up, with some unique stainless-steel trim panels and that red interior which, you'll be glad to hear, can be switched for a more muted dark grey effort.

The RS 60 Spyder commands a £5,400 price hike over the standard Boxster S, and goes on sale from March next year.
