Adrian Sutil has been convicted of causing grievous bodily harm and given an 18-month suspended sentence by a Munich court.

District judge Christiane Thiemann also fined the former Force India Formula One driver €200,000 (£167,000) after he was found guilty of injuring Eric Lux, chief executive of Lotus team owners Genii Capital, by striking him with a champagne glass and causing a wound in his neck which required 24 stitches.

The incident happened in a nightclub in Shanghai following the 2011 Chinese Grand Prix.

Court spokeswoman Ingrid Kaps said the 29-year-old German driver's fine would go to charities of the court's choosing.

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton had initially been scheduled to appear as a witness, but was excused due to team duties.

So that's why F.I. didn't retain him for the next season. What a shame. He drove pretty well in a mediocre car.
