Aston’s iQ test
This is the Cygnet, Aston Martin's new city car based on the Toyota iQ.
Seriously. We're not joking about this one. This is real.
At the moment, Aston is describing the Cygnet as a concept, but it seems very, very likely to reach production next year.
So what's the idea? Let's ask Aston's chief exec Ulrich Bez.
"This concept - akin to an exclusive tender to a luxury yacht - will allow us to apply Aston Martin design language, craftsmanship and brand values to a completely new segment of the market," says Bez.
"The offering of a ‘Cygnet' with a DBS, DB9 or Vantage is a unique combination of opposites and a novel transport solution allowing intelligent and sensitive mobility."
Which means, we think, that the Cygnet will be the short-range dinghy to the millionaire's DBS yacht. Makes some sort of sense, but can it really be an Aston?
If you're thinking, "well, maybe if it's powered by a big V8...", afraid not. We'd expect the underpinnings to be pure iQ - so a 1.0- or 1.3-litre petrol engine - though with Aston's own wheels, tyres and, of course, deeply plush interior.
As you can see from the photo, it'll get a One-77-inspired front end, complete with wide, angry grille and bonnet vents. We're told that the Cygnet could cost around £20,000 - which is a hell of a lot for an iQ, though very reasonable for an Aston, if you want to look at it that way.
You'll only be able to buy a Cygnet if you're an existing Aston owner, so any of you thinking it's a cheap way into Aston ownership, think again.
What’s your opinion, TGers? To give Aston the benefit of the doubt, imagine the Cygnet with this paintjob and a big set of shiny alloys. Is it more of an Aston than, say, that bizarre Lagonda-thing?

I don't want to believe this car's an Aston but it is... it's so un-very Aston Martin in an exclusive kind of way. In a way I kind of want it to get built ( just to say with conviction that I own an Aston - funnily ), but also don't ( as it could hurt Aston's ultra-rich clientele base ) but...

Given it appears to be a 'buy it when you buy a proper Aston' kind of deal , perhaps rather than the 1.3 engine assumed here, it could infact be an electric or hybrid, and is , maybe, a way of offsetting the carbon footprint of the real cars. It would certainly keep the greens a bit happier.

That's the most awesome thing I've seen since last night when JC crashed a volvo, but I'm not sure this is a wise route for Aston to go down, they've still got exclusivity going for them and this might tread that into the ground... And it kinda ruins the whole sporty rep...

Ahem... well done Aston! I'm sure developing and selling this car will be much cheaper than weeing away a fortune in 'penalties' to the EU for vastly exceeding their draconian (and pointless) average C02 limits. Even if the car is a loss leader it is better the money goes back into the car industry than into the coffers to pay MEPs' expenses...

I think it's a brilliant idea! You buy a DBS for real, and you get this one no matter what. Every time you need to enter London or anything, you're bound to take this baby. Sooner or later you'll distinguish naturally between taking the sportscar for a real ride or this one for citywork and short trips. Jay Leno will love it! And let's face it: it's not cool to take a DBS to stand still in a traffic jam.

So lets say somebody buys a Vantage, no options so its as cheep as possible. How many Astoyotins can they buy? Is there a set limit? One per customer? Or could they buy say 50 and sell them on to cover the cost of there Aston?

Has Aston gone mad or something? Firstly the present us with the Lagonda which has the underpinnings of a 4X4 Merc which is wrong for many reasons. And now this? A "TOYOTA!" with an Aston body kit, a cheap nasty little Japanese car should never ever wear such a prestigious badge. Aston what have you done?? This is the ugliest car ive seen since the Fiat multipla thing. Aston Martin is a luxury car manufacture yet they are making a small hatchback. Or as above buy yourself a Vauxhall Monaro for the same price. I hope that this never goes in to production !

Guys, you're all going crazy saying that this "isn't like a proper Aston Martin", but how do you know that? How do you know Aston Martin won't add twin supercharges to that 1.3 litre engine to make it chug out around... oh, I don't know... a modest 600hp? That would make it perfect!! If people had the kind of disposable income to buy a full on Aston Martin, why on earth would they buy this as well? Hang on fellas, if the Cygnet goes into production then it's not supposed to be compared to a Toyota iQ or VW Golf - because it will be available only to existing Aston customers. On that front, I don't see how the brand will be hurt. I'd like to know what happens if somebody sells their old DB7, Vanquish, DB9, Vantage, etc... does their Cygnet go with it, or may we eventually see Cygnets making their way onto the used market on their own?

At first glance, and I mean glance, I thought the Cygnet was a rather cute little idea. After coming-round from 'mysteriously' passing out due to sheer vomit-inducing horror, however, I read on to find this may be more than a concept. Please Aston... Please don't make this car. Surely those wealthy enough to afford yachts have the money to buy another Vantage, you know... they're not exactly huge in dimension, are they? When I think of an Aston, I can hear snarling, creamy smooth V8's & V12's, imagining it wrapped in a gorgeous, evocative body, and that's exactly how it should be.

It's an iteresting idea but for Aston not really a feasible one. Their brand is equisite sports cars and this (last time I checked) doesn't come into that catorgory. And anyone that already owns an Aston is hardly going to want an IQ especially in that colour.

I dont think Aston Martin actually designed this with practicality in mind. More it is a novelty for rich Asti Owners to drive around in and show up there rich friends house in an eco-friendly piece of shit with an Aston Martin label. I have a very big problem with this car, If aston were ttrying to get with the times and (maybe) create a cheap, small, efficient car they have done so so, but without realising it they have mucked it all up by letting you only own one of these beauties if you have a V12 monster parked next to it WHAT IS THE POINT...?

I very much hope that Aston do not put this car into production. Ugly cars can be done by companies such as Toyota but Aston has stood for brilliant design and performance for so long it will ruin the brand. It is a gimik. Nobody respects a gimik. The idea if having a small car to go with your big Aston is a good idea but they should have put the looks at the forefront. Cars such as the Fiat 500 and Alfa MiTo are small and don't look like siphilis on wheels. It's not a good idea.

I'M GONNA JUMP! And to thesupersnake, at least in a DB9, people respect you and you might get let out a few times instead of being ignored. No Aston, please, just no. Listen, you bring out the fabulous one-77, then the brilliant V12 vantage (Although the bonnet grilles are a bit, oh never mind, that's another post entirely) then you come out with the brilliant news of you in F1 in 2010 in your name, then, in some board meeting, someone had met an Environmentalist at a dinner party the night before, drunk a bit too much, and to be honest ,probably to even consider it, taken drugs, and then decided to say to the board, "Right, y'know we make super cars, well, how about a poncy little city car that is based on a Toyota, that we'll only sell to rich people who don't want it, completely skipping the people who might actually buy it." Unless it has loads of bling on the outside I don't see rich people driving one - they want a car that stands out and impresses people, otherwise they would have a toyota IQ already. Its so obvious this isnt real, first of all, Aston wouldn't put hood vents on something that size, second, there are wood shavings on the floor, meaning they are only making a model at the moment and third the is a picture of a proper aston next to it which they are probably using to get all the details right. and they wouldnt do that if they were making a new car! I think i might be a one-off issued by the owner of pro-drive to use in his peaceful village!

I can understand that Aston might want to create a more realistic vehicle suitable for more people- But why choose an Ugly Slow car designed for teenagers as their inspiration - Why not build a compact executive saloon like the size of a 5 series with a Turbocharged 3.0 diesel - It would be quick, economical and would still command respect and make people take Aston Martin seriously - This just seems like a bad attempt at a joke!

But come on, I mean after all those other brilliant cars they have made like the DBS and the DB9 they decide to make a city car which will not only cost a lot but all you're gonna get is a small 3.1 diesel engine and a tiny boot and at the end of the day its just a copy of the iQ. The bizarre Lagonda thing is more of an Aston. This is just not right, it's not what Aston Martin is supposed to be about. Am I correct in understanding that they only offer you the choice to buy one of these if you shell out for one of their proper cars? Otherwise, we'll see a hell of a lot more Astons about and that will devalue Aston as an exclusive, sporty brand, especially when you consider it will get out-dragged by a Vauxhall Corsa... that's just not right for them. And it really looks like the iQ.
