Is Audi's photocopier set to 80 per cent? Just as from the Q7 did come the Q5, so from the Q5 comes... the Q3, a dinky Audi crossover set to arrive in 2011.
OK, it won't look quite like the car in the photos. That's Audi's ‘Cross Coupe Quattro' concept from 2007, which previewed the styling of an upcoming mini-SUV. And now Audi has confirmed that production of the Q3 will begin in 2011 at the Seat factory in Martorell, Spain.
Smooth off a few of the concept's surfaces, cut down the wheels by a couple of sizes and ditch the glitzy white interior, and you should be pretty close to the production Q3.
If you're struggling to place it in the market, don't worry, it took us a while to figure out too. It'll sit a size below the BMW X3 - which is a rival for the Q5 - and will be based on a modified Tiguan platform. That means it could be a competitor for that weird BMW X1 concept we saw last year, if it makes production.
Audi describes the Q3 as ‘a coupe-like five-door SUV... which will stand out thanks to a supremely sporting driving experience'.
So, assuming it looks at least vaguely like the concept, are you excited about the upcoming Q3? A decent-looking premium crossover, or a niche too far?

The meaning of 'premium crossover' is 'ugly tractor made for cocks'. Decent looking it won't be. Come on Audi, once there was the S2 and now there's the A3 convertible which looks like a hat just like the BMW 1-series; once there was the Quattro and now there is a bunch of poof-looking crossovers just like Ssangyong is capable to make. Where's the Vorsprung and the Technik in crap cars like those?

Oh for crying out loud. I'm bored and fed up of small, useless softroaders. And I thought the public was too? Anyone who buys SUVs for style (thus proving they have none) would never go lower than a Q5. They should make a wide arched, coupe S3 and simply call it 'Quattro'. Not make a poser's car for teenagers. It's like dressing your 2-year-old in Playboy.

Audi seems to have turned its habit of making boring cars into a habit of making ugly cars. That's quite sad, because Audi's are generally good cars.

It doesn't matter what you call it or how you categorize it. It's just a car. There is nothing to understand about it, as long as it looks desirable and covers all the basics. It looks good. The build quality is probably good. It will have the same engines like all the other ones. No particular break-through. You have seen different styles of Dr Martin's shoes; the soles may have slightly different thickness and some may reach above the ankle and some don't. Can you wear them in the mud? Can you wear them on paved road? Can I buy some without you having an opinion?

In a time of depreciating car purchases, it looks as if with the X1 and Q3, BMW and Audi are hoping to tempt would be X3 and Q5 buyers with a smaller (ergo cheaper) alternative. Build quality will be high as always but I'm just not sure there's enough of a market segment for either manufacturer. As EU-nique commented, The Q5 is pretty much there or there about for most people ? and, if parking space is at a premium, the Q5 is actually shorter but has more boot space than the A4 Avant!

ok everyone, lets try to be practical. Audi is trying to please all sides of the spectrum, and i kinda like this. Remember the Q7 and Q5 are SUVs dont expect them to be super performing machines. just ignore marius2 hes just a monotone freak

Is it really going to be a "decent looking premium crossover" or just a smaller uglier version of a BMW X6? It might appeal to those downsizing from a Q7 or maybe they could be garagemates for a family of people who like large, vulgar cars: Q7 for Daddy Q5 for yummy mummy and Q3 for upstart designer clothes clad offspring?
