Audi A4

Audi likes to spread its engines around the ranges and the latest piece of mechanical jam is the 2.7-litre V6 turbodiesel unit.

This engine has been pasted into the A4 saloon and Avant estate, and comes in standard, SE and S Line trims.

The engine delivers 178bhp and a thickly spread 280lb ft of torque from just 1,400rpm, which helps the A4 manage 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds.

Fuel economy of 40.1mpg means your finances will not be spread too thinly, while the starting price of £25,270 is jammed in-between rivals from BMW and Mercedes.
