R8 Spyder leaked
See more Audi R8 Spyder pictures
You weren’t supposed to see this until next week, but the Audi R8 Spyder – the soft-top iteration of the lovely mid-engined supercar – has escaped onto the web (for the second time, actually, if you remember that Iron Man 2 leak).
It looks – as you might have confidently guessed – like an R8 with the roof removed. Actually, there’s a bit more to it than that: Audi has ditched the R8’s signature ‘side blades’ in favour of a pair of more conventional air scoops in front of the rear wheels.
The rear deck – which hides a fabric roof, though we’re yet to see a decent photo of the R8 Spyder with its roof up – features a neat new pair of air intakes. The windscreen is framed in brushed aluminium, too.
The Spyder will get the more powerful of the R8’s two engines: the Lambo-derived 5.2-litre V10 putting out 525bhp and 390lb ft of torque. The hard-top R8 V10 will hit 60mph in 3.9 seconds, so we’d expect the Spyder to crack the sprint in just over four seconds. That’s mighty quick.
We’ll get a better look at the Audi R8 V10 Spyder in Frankfurt next week in all its chocolatey goodness.

it looks a bit too curvy from the side view when looking at the bulge above the rear wheels, but the rear end definitely compensates for the side's shortcommings! oh and is there any model out there that audi isnt willing to take the roof off?! we'll be seeing Q7 convertibles next!

I love the back/top view with the aluminium vents, though I wish they included the side-blade. The blade was the R8's signature.

Looks better without the blades, more grown up and civilised. Though I have a nasty feeling that idiots are going to think its a TT when your driving it.

From the side it's almost identical in shape to the Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder, a car which I've always preferred over the Audi, which has too much front and not enough rear (in a design sense). Oh, and there's NO WAY you can actually mistake an R8 for a TT, coupe or otherwise, if you actually see one on the road. It's much lower, wider and louder. And mid-engined-shaped. And it has LED fairy lights. And black slats all over it. And an R8 badge.

Quick tip petrolhead94; if you press CAPS LOCK a second time, the letters go small again and your comment won't be annoying. Just sayin'.

Could they have picked a worse colour!! Glad the side blades are gone, just because they are the R8's signature doesn't mean they look good.

I always liked the side vents from the original R8, it was it's signature, I think losing them has lost a bit of the car's character... But it's still nice.

Am I the only on that thinks the woman in the passenger seat looks like Michael Jackson?? I guess I am then... The car does look very good, but (If I had the money) I would usually look elsewhere than the R8 - possibly that new RWD Gallardo...

Love the colour - imagine that on the coupe with beige sideblades and it will look like a fine italian shoe :)

It's not ugly, even in brown. Losing the silver sideburns is good. I'd not have it though. Why? I can't help but get the feeling an R8 convertible is a little bit silly. Not because it looks like a beefed-up TT but in the same way that a convertible Nissan GT-R would be a little bit silly. I'd have said the point of either is a no-compromises, as fast as the laws of physics allow tech-fest, and while that's fun and all it's not something you necessarily want to take a tin-opener to and be very conspicuous in. Convertible supercars are about one thing - looks. No offence Audi, but the Italian marques trump this effort by some considerable margin............
