The BBC and Sky have signed a new agreement to secure F1 broadcasting from 2012-2018.

Under the terms of the new agreement, Sky Sports will broadcast every single practice session, qualifying and race live, with the BBC getting rights to broadcast half the races, including the British GP, Monaco GP and the final race of the season.

BBC Radio 5 will still broadcast every race on the F1 calendar, while highlights of Sky Sports-covered races will appear on BBC television, online and mobile. Both will broadcast in high-definition.

It is the first time the entire season of F1 races have not been available live on free-to-air television.

Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport, said: "We are absolutely delighted that Formula One will remain on the BBC.

"With this new deal not only have we delivered significant savings but we have also ensured that through our live and extended highlights coverage all the action continues to be available to licence fee payers."

Barney Francis, MD of Sky Sports, said: "We will give Formula One the full Sky Sports treatment with a commitment to each race never seen before on UK television."

Jake Humphrey (@jakehumphreyf1) posted his immediate reaction on Twitter: "Feels like the right time to say how proud I am of the whole BBC F1 production team & the programmes we've produced for you guys since '09".

UPDATE: Ben Gallop, the BBC's head of F1, has written a blog on today's announcement here.

Not happy. Basically, it looks like Sky gets the lot, and the BBC gets a few crumbs and reheated leftovers. This is not 'sharing' coverage, this is holding the fanbase to ransom, and it's one I won't pay. My beloved sport is going to be beheaded on the Internet, to coin a phrase - most of it's getting cut off! I don't watch any other sport on a regular basis, so why on earth would I want to spend a fortune on a dedicated sports channel? In industry terms, the cost saving to the BBC is going to be tiny if the figures being bandied about in public are to be believed. Formula 1 is getting great ratings. We know times are hard, Auntie, but for crying out loud, was this really a way to tighten the purse strings?

My immediate reaction is that its disappointing that all the races are not live on the BBC. The common view is that the BBC have done a great job and I will miss being able to watch them on a regular basis. However, I suppose that there are several races on the calendar that don't attract a lot of excitement and interest from people at home (e.g. Turkey) and from a financial sense I'm sure this works out much better for the BBC to cherry pick the best races to show live audiences. I just hope they are able to keep the same team together. I'm interested to know which races the BBC will show live and if the highlights of races not covered live have some sort of studio discussion with Jake, David and Eddie.

This is outrageous, Bernie say that this will increase the coverage that F1 gets. I think he is completely wrong! it will be the complete opposite. Fans are not going to get sky just to watch the F1 and they are probably not going to be happy with just the highlights! I hope the teams rally against this the Concorde Agreement states that F1 should be shown of Free to Air TV where possible, it is possible and it should be done! I was just getting back in F1 after the boredom of the Schumacher years and now I think I will go back to spending my Sunday afternoons productively! It was good whilst it lasted.
