Bentley Mulsanne revealed

Bentley has unveiled its all-new Arnage replacement in Pebble Beach, and it is called the Mulsanne.
Top name, but what do you think of the car?

Bentley hasn’t released any technical details on the Mulsanne yet, but we know it’ll be powered by a revised version of the tried-and-tested 6.75-litre V8, which can trace its origins back a full 50 years to 1959.
Power and torque outputs are yet to be confirmed, but we’d expect something in the 500bhp region with a 0-60mph time of around five seconds.
Though it takes styling cues from both the old Arnage and the Continental range, the Mulsanne is a completely clean-sheet design. The only elements carried over from any existing Bentley are the wing mirrors, which are borrowed from the Continental Supersports.
“The challenge we set our engineers was to create a new grand Bentley that would stand as the pinnacle of British luxury motoring, offering the world’s most exclusive driving experience,” says Bentley CEO Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen.
“They have responded to this challenge with real passion and the result is a luxury grand tourer that sets new standards in terms of comfort, effortless performance and hand-crafted refinement – the very qualities for which Bentley is renowned.”
Bentley says the Mulsanne is inspired by its classic 1930 road car, the 8-litre. However, those quad headlights – and we really can’t decide whether we’re keen on them or not – hark back to the original Flying Spur S1 of the mid-fifties.
The Muslanne will go on sale in the middle of next year, but we’ll get a whole load more technical details at the Frankfurt show next month.

It takes some getting used to, but I think it's worth the effort. The overall line is elegant, like a grand lady that's still beautiful whatever her age might be. She's allowed some eccentricity too. Headlights and wheels are okay, but those secondary lights in the front look somewhat randomly placed. Some sort of fitting might help there. A bit less polishing would be nice as well.

Looks like the premiership rooney-esque chavs are having their influence on the Bently. I love the original Bentley 8-litre for its raw brutalness. This is just a chavved up shiny blingy thing... Get rid of those shiny wheels, the shiny grills, the shiny side mirrors and the shiny paint and all the other shiny bits and then it might look a little more tasteful!

I like the front, and it would probably look way better in black and with some smaller wheels, as opposed to the "champagne gold" blingtastic colour and 21" rims. Pity about the rear though, they keep messing it up on all the newer models and making it look like a cheap korean sedan. In fact, it looks just similar to the rear on that new jag - and that's no compliment.

Those wheels are rubbish. The chap at Volkswagen probably thought: Let's create something quintessentially... Rubbish!!! Whoever Premiership Footballers and Rappers will love this Bentley. They don't have to buy new wheels to give it a bit of bling bling. For me however the Phantom still kicks the ass of this new kid on the block.

in the first pic i thought i was looking at the bently equivelent of the rolls royce knock off that was on the show a while ago, but as you go through the photos and let it sink in there is a lot of class to be seen in it, the sloping boot is very 30's, just falls short of having a picnic basket attached to it! but the two 'extra headlights' make it a bit too cutsie from the front.

I don't like the oO[=]Oo light configuration. The center of the four lights should be aligned, not the bottoms. It looks like the front of that Japanese Rolls-Royce knock off James drove that sumo bloke around in.

It looks like a Continental GT and the Old Arnage mated together to give birth to a very ugly but happy looking Car...It should be called Carnage GT!!!!

Such an elegant, stately car...spoiled by having the face of a startled guinea pig. Those lights are out of place, hideously so, and do make the machine look more like a far-eastern fake than the genuine article. As for the wheels...a Bentley gets away with the blinged-up appearance more than a Roller so they're not so bad, although they are a bit like oversized silver tea-trays for my taste. Would be fine with them though, unlike those blooming lights.

No, no, it's just not right. None of it. Where is the stately elegance, the subtlety and the charm? If you take away that cartoonish front end ll I am seeing from that front 3/4 shot is a Hillman Avenger! Maybe it's just that awful colour. Thank goodness Jaguar have given us Brits something to be proud of as this certainly isn't it.

Wuy are all the car makers making new models of their old cars Volkswagen brought back the Scirocco. Dodge the Challenger. Chevy the Camero. I think that, from a distance, the front end of this car would look as though it had just been involved in a collision. The headlight arrangement is terribly ugly.

I can't help thinking that those secondary wing lights should be somewhere else. A nice idea on a concept model perhaps, but they don't have the timeless appeal of a true Bentley. well... i like it, the side profile is pure modern bentley, & the behind i'd be more than glad to dragon... but the front, well; if its dead on then it looks good; but from a tilted side shot, i just can't digest it... other than that; i'd take it over a rolls anytime!

I don't like the new face - it has a retard smile. The big headlights are too detailed and look sillier for it, the rear shape is a little wierd, the wheels are rap-tastic, it's almost like they tried too hard to make a "new Arnage" that wasn't just an updated Arnage, and so they took said model and fiddled with it too much (no sex pun intended). It also looks pre-set-up for the West Coast Gangsta scene, especially in chrome-on-beige trim. I'm sure 50 Pence will be pleased...

I can't take it seriously as a Rolls-Royce Phantom rival, either. It just doesn't seem... up there. This is less tasteful, I think. Maybe less dignified too (like all modern Bentleys). I can't see Rollers trading their Phantoms in for one at any rate. Beats a Maybach hands down, though.

I think in the shot of it's arse and side, it looks like a Porsche Panamera. Another Immensley Crap car. Bentley used to compete with Rolls-Royce. Well they used to be the same company. Then Volkswagen took over Bentley. And then everything went arse-about-tit. Bentley now has no competition, because everything(except electric cars and Porsche) is better than them. I think it would look good if the headlights didn't look like lightbulbs in spotty pyrex dishes. Nice colour though. Bentley used to be able to make cars. But it seems like they let the Malaysians design and make their cars nowadays. A message to Bentley:- Change the headlights, change the bonnet, its just a brooklands bonnet with another crease in it. The wheels need changing, they look like the ones on a Ford Transit.

Compared to Rolls Royce's just released Ghost this car's design is quite basic except for the front which reminds me of that 1977 flick - " The Car ".

It looks a bit like a metallic clown grinning at the car ahead. the round eyes, the air dam's lines sweeping like up and to the back like a grin. I'm not terribly fond of the front design. what's with those tiny outside headlamps?? The back looks ok though. It's basically still a Bentley, but then the designers seem to have gone bonkers while working on the front

It would work better if they changed those secondary headlights from circles into elongated ovals down the front (You know, like the indicators on an old Silver Shadow/T5). Oh and burn alive the man who designed those alloys. I'll gather wood and petrol while you tie him up.

I know this has probably already been said but there are alot of comments lol. It looks like they've melted the front of a phantom. The elegance and grace of the rear shape and lines is ruined by the horrible front, the fog lights are in a bad position and the grooves beside the main lights need removed quite badly, also the very square defining line at the bonnet and front need softened or removed. I would say it's a design that would grow on you gradually over a very very very long time. Also did they just steal the wheels from the phantom.

oh dear this car thanks to them lights makes the old fiat multipla look reasonable. the old mulscane turbo looked great all bently need to do is sort the lights out and all would be ok. stop the retro thing on this model and modernise the lights. because this looks like that fake chinese rools royce and thats not a good thing

So much for the aristoctaric looks. That side curve reminds me of the Quattroporte and that front end...the headlamps make it look like some scared to death animal with hideous eyes. And the worst part is that it's bling...very bling.........

I've got to say I don't think there's a single design feature I like on that car, it looks like that fake Rolls that James May drove in Japan or that new fake Mercedes E class from Asia (oh sorry that's actually a real E class it just looks like a cheap knock off). The grille is very Bentley, and I like it alot. All they need to do now is redesign everything else! Especially those chrome dinner plate wheels... Hideous...

I think this car looks like the flying spur, contentialGT and the Arange altogether but i thuink it could do with a bigger engine like a V12 or a W12 engine.

I've been waiting a while for this unveiling; actually since I received notification in the post of the 90-year celebration. I think Bentley have done well. The original 8-Litre was quite handsome & a bit of a locomotive as is this Mulsanne. The car has a strong presence & an elegance that can not be disputed as any but a Bentley despite is German underpinnings. The headlight treatment is hi-tech & daring & the large upright grille & broad shoulder lines exude a sense of immense power & athlesticism despite its' grand size. The rear end treatment is a great reflection of the original 8-Litre's boot, & the short front overhang & long-esh rear overhang give it a sense of speed even when stationary. Very nicely executed I say.

I guess the economic downturn forced Bentley to join forces with Geely and have let them do the design. Anyway happy Bentley looks happy.
