Lamborghini Gallardo news - Blind quick - 2008

Who says the Belgians never do anything interesting? Belgian Luc Costermans has broken the world blind road speed record in a Lamborghini Gallardo in France.

Costermans, accompanied by co-pilot Guillaume Roman, hit 192mph in the Gallardo on a closed road in Istres, near Marseilles, to take the record from Briton Mike Newman, who reached 161mph in his BMW M5 three years ago.

Costermans dedicated his record to F1 driver Philippe Streiff, who has been a tetraplegic since suffering an accident in the Brazil GP in 1989.

The Gallardo, in case you were wondering, was borrowed from a friend. We need more friends like that.

But if you’re feeling just slightly disappointed that another world record has slipped away from the Brits, despair not: Billy Baxter, the man that managed a quicker lap around the TG test track than Terry Wogan and Richard Whiteley, despite being sightless, still holds the blind solo motorbike land speed record of 165mph.

And don’t forget that our very own Stig holds the world indoor speed record, though we’re not completely sure whether that was rescinded after he ate that Guinness Book of Records gong.

Oh, and we’ve got one for rolling the Ford Sierra six times. Though we’re near certain that one’s been topped by some local scally in a Citroen Saxo on an Essex back road in the meantime…
