We like a good online car configurator here at Top Gear: speccing up cars we could never hope to own, seeing how much we can hike the price by ticking our favourite option boxes (carbon ceramic brakes are always a pleasurably expensive addition).
Happily, Porsche has just released a shiny new configurator for its four-door Panamera, so we’ve been getting busy on that today. In just a few happy clicks, not only have we wracked up just shy of £120k, but we’ve also chosen a horrid paint option. Get us.
We then moved onto VW’s site to have a shot at the new Golf GTI, and were slightly shocked to find that we’d accidentally built one for just over £30k.
That’s a lot of dough to drop on a Golf, especially considering what second hand bargains you can pick up at the moment.
But finally, as is always the way with this game, real world considerations went swiftly out the window. Hence this black-with-gold-wheels Ferrari 430 Scuderia. We can’t help ourselves.

Always a great way of killing time - my favourite is the Maserati car configurator at http://configurator.maserati.com/gtcc/landing.page?lang=en¤tCountry=81 It's amazing how fast you can turn a gorgeous, glorious Granturismo into a green and orange mess with black alloys, blue calipers and a huge array of colours for all the surfaces, the stitching, the carpets... Everything.

What about the 'Amethyst' colour for the Panamera? It's just a ghastly shade of purple! Plus you can have a bright red interior to really set it apart from, er, good specs. But, and I can tell you from far too much experience, that's nothing compared to what you can do with a 911 or Cayman (Ladies and gentlemen, I give you 'Cayman skin pattern' leather for the centre console). Try it and see. I recommend a Carrera if you go 911 - more options than the more special versions.

Any colour you like. But this one, that is. Then again, there's no colour in the world that'd make this car look uglier than it already is. Why, Porsche? Why? They really lost it, ever since the 996.

I hate Porsche's configurator because it never, ever seems to work. VW's configurator? No problem. Bugatti's? Works a dream. But Porsche's? I can't even get past the page where you select 3D or 2D modes. Which is a shame because my dream car is a 911 Turbo...

People are like "Oh, the Civic's value went up by £4k". Pah. Every time I use the Porsche configurator, I spend at least £20k on options alone, and not even on purpose! It's mental how much money you can blow. alcantara roof, leather steering column, about £100 to have the instrument surround in leather or aluminium finish, £200 for a rear wiper (!), it's just mental! I can't think of another manufacturer where you can do this (with a configurator anyway)!

Also, agreed with the options. The worst is that there are tons of options that you never think of, but seem almost important having seen them there on the list. For example, the fire extinguisher for £150 or something. Seems like a rip-off, but you know Sod's Law says as soon as you order your 911 Turbo without one, it'll catch fire almost as soon as it comes off the delivery truck. Mind, I found a heavily-specced 911 Turbo in a dealership, selling used at just under £30k, so if I had the money i'd just buy that instead and save me the hassle. :P

Chanchao, that Cayenne is really rather horrible, but you want to know the REALLY sad thing? I see people driving around in those sorts of things where I'm living in Germany. Orange Porsches, orange Volkswagens, orange Audis... Not pleasant at all. But still, not as hog-ugly as the Panamera at the top of the page.

Now that has to be a record (for the BASE Panamera) - £105, 306 including £38,952 of options!! It's always those interior extras that get me - do I really need powered sunblinds, alcantara roof lining, a heated carbon-fibre steering wheel covered in buttons, a fire extinguisher and TV? Yes. Yes I do. Sorry to disappoint, but it's actually a nice shade of blue with the 19" Design alloys and reasonable cream leather.

(Last post on this article I swear) Wow, an option on the new GT3 Clubsport took me by surprise: Lightweight Headlamps! Remove the washing system to save a whopping 6kg!! That in itself stopped me adding ANY interior features in fear of wasting that 6kg saving... probably a real money saver, that, especially as it's free. Unfortunately lightweight bucket seats and Carbon Ceramic Brakes still added £10k.

I went on the Perodua website to configure a kenari, just to see what there was. they say theres a fantastic range of bright colours. theres 3 colours. 2 of which are silver. believe it or not theres a perodua fan club. why? oh, and the ssang yong website id funny too. they say you can whisk a hen party in a rodius with the wide range of powerful engines. hmmm...

Why's no-one mentioned BMW - the KINGS of options?? I've just specced up a 116i to just shy of £32k, a 318iES to over £42k (almost twice it's original price) a 520dSE to just short of £53k and a 730dSE to just under £92k!! - over £38k in options!!! woohoo

BMW is definitely option king. On the UK configurator, I got a MINI up to 30,890 pounds, in a lovely shade of bright metallic blue with chocolate brown soft-top, black stripes and a black-&-brown interior. Yum. OK, I started with a JCW soft-top... I own a (rather more tasteful) MINI and you have to be REALLY careful with the options list!

if i'm being honest i think that with this porsche we've reached the pinnacle of car design. This Panamera is peerless in conception and delivery and i believe will never be bettered by mankind. There really is no point discussing this any further.
