This is the Dacia Lodgy Glace

Is this Romanian ice racer the most strangely named car of 2011?

And now the grand pantheon of Cars With Very Silly Names has a new member. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the Dacia Lodgy Glace.

Dacia Lodgy Glace.

That’s ‘Lodgy’ to rhyme with ‘stodgy’. Or ‘dodgy’. That’s ‘Glace’ to rhyme to with er, ‘passé’. Or maybe ‘lace’. Either way it’s ridiculous.

The Lodgy Glace is the new ice racer from Renault’s Romanian budget brand - and favourite of James - set to compete in this winter’s Andros Trophy ice race series in the lodgy hands of Alain Prost.

It uses the same 3.0-litre V6 as last year’s Dacia Duster ice racer, mid-mounted and tuned by Sodemo to make a lodgy 355bhp. Built around a tubular steel chassis, it weighs just 950kg. It has four-wheel drive. It has four-wheel steer. It’ll be fast. It’ll be sideways. It’ll be lodgy.

Unless you’re a filthy-rich ice racer, you won’t be able to get a Lodgy Glace on your driveway, but you might get a standard Lodgy.

The road-going Dacia Lodgy – a budget MPV that, we’re told, ‘evokes notions of generous interior space and the importance of family’ – will be revealed at next year’s Geneva motor show.

Dacia hasn’t yet confirmed whether the non-ice-racing Lodgy join the Duster and Sandero on sale in the UK, but you can be sure that, if it does, the Glace-free Lodgy will be rather less powerful.

So what do you think, TG? Lodgy? Or not-lodgy?

We've seen the Kia Picanto around (spicy poppadom) and the Fiat Croma (baking fat). Lodgy Glace just makes me think of a Swiss lodge and icecream. Still, not a bad combination...

I don't think this is what they ment when they said "Build them like the Japanese!". Well, maybe they got the naming AND the build quality from them!

Is it being driven by Alain Prost?! Also, if you say it in a French accent it makes more sense. Sounds a bit like 'logic'. Or in a Romanian accent. Then it sounds a bit like 'racism'.

Well maybe... just maybe, when "the rest of the world" decides to name a car they don't really bother with the way it sounds in british english (i.e. if it rhymes with dodgy or not). Especially since UK isn't really the main market for this car. It sounds quirky, but there isn't really anything wrong with it.
