For sale: 1965 Dodge concept
Have you ever wanted to own a car that looks like a newt?
Then get yourself to the RM Icons of Speed and Style auction in California on September 26. Once you’re there, wave your arms around or scratch your nose and make a bid on this 1965 Dodge Deora concept.
Built for the Detroit Autorama back in the ’60s, by some hot-roddy types called Mike and Larry Alexander, the Deora later became one of the original Hot Wheels toy cars.
The more astute among you may have noticed the lack of doors. But instead of slithering in through the side windows, the front of the cab opens like a venus flytrap – allowing the driver to bundle in arse-first.
The auctioneers reckon it will fetch up to $550,000 at the auction. And if you make the winning bid, let us know. We’d love to have a go.

I'd like to see NCAP test it... Considering American brakes back then, a crashtest would be useful.

I want someone to bid for a joke and then win! Then they'd have to cough up a lot of money for something that looks like it's just had a bit of a crash in the back!

How do you get into that thing? Is the whole front en a pop-up door? I am assuming we are looking at the front of the car (those are head lights and not backup lights, yes.

I remember seeing a TV show on Discovery HD or whatever it was where they took the Deora II ('90s Hot Wheels sequel to this) toy car and made a fully functioning, full-size replica based on a Cadillac for SEMA one year. This car was then residing in the Hot Wheels Museum, alongside the only other other full-size replica, one of Twin Mill. They've also brought to life "Whatta Drag", a BMW Isetta with a dragster on the back. Hot Wheels rules!

I think the TV show you are talking about, Mikeado, is called Rides, hosted by Jason Priestley, and it was a new version of the Deora to commemorate some anniversary of Hot Wheels. Anyway, although it doesn't seem very safe or good-performing, it does look cool. I think it will actually be sold for much more than the expected half-million. Maybe US$ 850'000. By some Hot Wheel collector.

Ahh, funky car design before the age of crumple zones and whatnot. I think it's rather cool, it's a mid-engined yute! It would be the ideal car to go cruising along the beach with. Wouldn't go faster than 15 mph though, for safety reasons, and to get properly noticed of course.

What you could do with it is change the front end to be the back end, swivel seats and inside etc. Throw a huge engine it and voila you have a car with the longest bonnet in history!!

its not too close to having the elegance of an alfa romeo but it does look interesting, i would love to know more about its interior and engines. but i could easily assume that under that fantastic body there is an unrefined chasis that has a huge engine which guarentees terrible handling. it does look like something from thunderbirds. what about euro ncap because theres not much between the driver and the thing that you would hit. but im sure theres tonnes of prototypes around for sale and some are fantastic cars

Don't be so stuck-up, appreciate something that's genuinely unique. I'd have this over any generic-swoopy-ugly-hybrid-monstrosities they churn out these days. Check out the door system, it pretty cool, in fact now I know where a certain miniature Japanese concept with a robot inside got the doors from...

It's real???!!!! This was my favorite Hot Wheel when I was a kid, next to the "Splittin' Image" Now, at 49, I'd love to have it in my driveway.
