Pack horse
If you've got a Ferrari 599 knocking about in your garage, now's the time to dust it off and wing it to a dealership.
When you get there, ask them to bolt on an HGTE handling pack, which is now
available as a retro-fit option.
The pack lowers the car by 10mm, stiffens the spring rates and anti-roll bars,
gets you racier rims and tyres (for eight per cent more grip!) and, of course,
recalibrates your magnetorheologically controlled dampers. Hmm. We've no idea
what that means, but we're told it makes your car nicer to drive around
corners.
If your 599 was made from 2008 onwards, you can get a power increase too, which quickens the already lightning-fast gearchanges to just 85 milliseconds.
There's also a ruder exhaust on offer, which owners of older cars can choose.
The pack also tarts up the exterior, with a new grille and matt-finish prancing
horse badges.
And the price for all this? £17,213 if your 599 was built before 2008; £19,703
if it was made after then.
Or you could save the cash and buy yourself a nearly new Golf GTi instead.
It'd look good next to the 599 on the drive...

If I had that much money, I'd buy both, the wine cellar and the handling pack. It's probably unnoticeable on the road, but who wouldn't go track day with a Ferrari?

Improvements to an already awesome car; if you can afford the car, you really should get the package as well. No banana yellow though thank-you-very-much.

I agree Wotski. Ferrari 599 with an upgrade pack would make it sublime. Choose Rossa Corsa paint (Red) with a track day specialised package and it'll be an amazing car.

I have a 2009 brand new 599 with all the options( which did cost me lot off the base price). I'll buy this package though it will cost me £19,703. This is one amazing car uncomparable to the GTI and it is worth its price.

Hmmm, a 599 GTB doesn't really jump out at me, other than the fact that it's a big V12 Ferrari. I'm not sure what I'd have instead though. Astons are very nice, but it doesn't take much imagination to default to one of those. Perhaps £200k is better spent on a more special-feeling Murcielago LP640. Or a Zonda. Or a house. Either way, I'm not sure a mild upgrade is really worth £17k. Perhaps it is on already very expensive cars...

I saw a replay of the episode with JC driving the F40 yesterday, so I'm off electronic gadgets for a while. I think he was right: all the luxury electromagnetic adjustable automatic stuff is depressing for everyone who wants to really drive a car. It's quite alright for citycruising or commuting of course, but... well... When the F40 was new, journalists were afraid to drive it, it was thát intimidating. Having enough money to buy one didn't qualify you to own one. You also had to have a truckload of talent, a deathwish or a lack of graphic imagination, it seemed. I miss that, these days supercars are as safe as kittens.

So if I had a 599, I'd probably go look for a nice Daytona, in a Golf GTI. No, in an Integrale III. To keep up appearances, you know?

Use that $20K and go to racing school for the summer. You probably shave off more time as a result than being an amateur with the HGTE pack.

Realise you've got a modicum of sense and a dash of taste. What you'd do is walk straight past the 599 and buy a Daytona...why not? I've been in it; sounds tin like at low revs and the interior falls apart. I'd rather have those compromises in a car that would deem me as a human being.

The Golf GTI is a good idea. The package, useless. If I'd have too much money, I'd have to spend it on a wine cellar and stay home.
