Golf R vs Scirocco R
Back in September, we showed you VW's natty head-to-head advert and asked which hot VeeDub you'd take home: the Golf R or Scirocco R?
Now Volkswagen has released prices for its pair of hyper-hot sort-of-hatches, and the majority of you who opted for the Scirocco (actually, the majority of you went for the Focus RS, but we can't help feeling you weren't really playing by the rules) should feel vindicated: when it goes on sale in the UK next February, the ‘Roc will cost £26,945, undercutting the Golf by two grand.
Don't forget you get slightly less power from the Scirocco (261bhp plays 266bhp) and only half the driven wheels.
The Golf R has permanent four-wheel drive while the ‘Roc remains front-drive only, giving the hatch the edge over the coupe in the 0-62mph battle: the Golf will nail the sprint in 5.7 seconds, while the Scirocco takes a lethargic 6.0 seconds.
Both of those times drop by point-two of a second if you spec VW's DSG gearbox, which'll cost you £1,300.
So, now you know the prices, would you still take the Scirocco over the Golf? Or is that £25,000 Ford Focus RS still too tempting?
Or even, as the new issue of Top Gear magazine on sale this week poses, the new £22k Renault Megane RS?

Focus RS hands down. And if i would have to buy a Golf of any kind, i'd buy a TT, or a Leon FR/Cupra.

Probably the Scirocco. Not too keen on the Focus, don't like the Golf or Megane, not an option here but I dislike the Type R too... £26000 for a car like this is a tad excessive. With VW financeers you'd be looking at maybe 14 to 18 percent APR and yet you could go to a bank get the same £26000, get 4 to 8 percent and get an 2002 NSX or decent 1996 Porsche 911 993

In fact, come to think of it, looking at Auto Trader quickly, £26,000 would give you a very, very wide and varied choice of amazing cars.

Are VW having a laugh with their pricing? They need to understand they are not Audi. Add some options to either the Golf and the Scirocco and you could easily nudge £30K . For that money I'd rather go for an Audi S3, but for anything less I'd go for the Focus RS. Just my opinion.

I mean look at the scirocco compared to the golf..its wider, lower, more aggressive..obviously racier! Ofc I'd take the scirocco. I want to like the focus RS, but it doesn't look very composed when it drives..I mean tripod mode isn't something new cars should do..and it does it because it has a high center of gravity. Something the scirocco doesn't have. AWD does make the golf more appealing, but at that BHP the difference between AWD to FWD isn't that great. Scirocccooo!

clearly it has to be the Scirocco, it´s much better looking than the other cars and it has the most advance technology:DSG and direct fuel injection, just as the golf., and it has very well-built .The focus is to vulgar and it is not that much faster than both vw and the megane is very cheap and fast, but in my opinion it is too ugly.

I'd take the Scirocco any day from that bunch, Focus is a chav car, Megane is pointless for day to day use. Golf is a bit boring, the Scirocco looks the best! The Monk if you were willing to spend an extra 10k you could get a decent Ferrari 355, i'd take that any day!!

golf every time admitedly it doesnt look as good as the roc but it has more space is quicker and its a better q car. i wouldnt have the focus because it is a chav car and you couldnt live with the megane if you wanted a hardcore track car buy a used caterham.

Yeah, but one day the 355 will just self-ignite. Either with you in it, or without you in it. Not sure what is worse. The Megane they are talking about here is the new one, not the Megane Renaultsport R26.R or whatever it was called that Hammond drove. And I don't think the new one (at least the non-hardcore racetrack edition, if they have such a thing, again) will be awful as a daily driver. I'd take the Scirocco, just based on looks. Though the new Megane coupe looks quite sharp too, esp. in the racing version. But that is a different beast.

The Golf is slightly on the expensive side at around £29k, but don't forget the Golf is the fastest accelerating car out of the four and has 4WD to cope with the 266 precise German horses. The standard Scirocco is incredibly pretty, but the R version just looks like it's chewing a squirrel and it's got FWD, but it's £2k cheaper than the Golf and both VW will include impeccable build quality. The RS Megane sounds very good. It's the cheapest and will be extremely good fun. Yes the quality will be a little ropey but it's cheap, very cheap. The Ford is like a nightclub with wheels. It's got 300bhp running through the front wheels! That's like trying to resuscitate someone using a food blender - mad! However the RS has a fantastic chassis and a clever electronic diff to handle all the power. It's a difficult choice to say the least, but overall i'd go for the Renault. Yes the quality will be a bit ropey, but it's fantastic value for money and will put a huge smile on your face.

i wouldnt get the golf it looks big and lumpy unlike the stilish scirroco. TG luv the roc so much they (james) wrote a song about it but that was a crap diesel.but i luv that focus rs and then the meg.petrolhead247 is right the renault is the best value for money. Tpott: A Ferrari 355 is a dream car but like all dreams, you wake up, and when you wake up from a 355 dream, you'll wake up into the world described by Kadajawi. I'd rather spend that extra £10,000 on a year's petrol in an NSX or a 911. In an unsensible world, I'd go for a 355 - I understand the appeal of a Ferrari over a Porsche - but for a used supercar I'd go for the latter. Used 355's are collector's cars rather than driver's cars.

Actually, you know what I think Top Gear should do? They should have a feature on the website using new cars like the RS or the Scirocco R, and then put their price tags up against used cars that can be bought for the same price - £26,000 Scirocco vs. £26,000 1996 Porsche 911 (993)... and what was the Mugen? £36,000 or something? £36,000 Mugen Civic vs.... well, how about 3 BMW Alpina B3's?

i would rather have a second hand Monaro VXR which you could pick up for around £20,000. But its not about the Monaro is it. So on that bombshell i would pick the Ford Focus RS .The simple fact is that its lairy and hasnt got scafolding in the back. also its not German so it means that it has a soul.

i think it would have to be the scirocco becuase its by far the best looking, the golf is a bit too expensive but still actually good value for money it seems, the focus is just a bit too much and too chavy, i dont know about the megane, id rather be seen in a golf or scirocco r ..

Who in their right minds would have the Golf over the Scirocco?! £2,000 less for a car with almost identical performance and looks to die for (especially it in white)! And as for the Focus, amazing technically, but look at it!! Its sooo chinzy, no thanks! And the Megane, looks good, is fast but is French. I would however be tempted by the Honda Civic Type R.... Now all i need is the money for either of these!

I don't even understand why we are having this conversation; the new Astra VXR is coming out next year, it already has better exterior than the Golf, better interior than the Focus and seeing that Hot Hatches nowadays have more than 250 BHP and it's arch rival has 300, lets say it will have at least 280 BHP. Also seeing that it will be competing with the Golf GTI and Focus ST, one can safely assume it will be priced well under 25K. So let's wait before making a judgment. I personally don't think these Hot Hatch wannabes are hot enough, or VXR enough!!!

I doubt the Golf has 'permanent' AWD, it will have the same hadex AWD system as the other Golfs, the Audi A3 and the Audi TT. Basically the rear wheels will only get more power one grip is lost and the split will be 50-50 max. Only the Audi A4/5/6/8 have all time AWD based on a Torsen differential (even if Audi calls all their AWD's 'Quattro' this is only a marketing term covering different technologies). I'd no doubt have the Focus RS. Hands down. That car is just amazing, and if i couldn't get hold of one from the dealer, I'd find someone who HAS a Focus RS and set fire to them, in his backyard, in front of his family. And then be so angry with myself for burning up the keys that were in the guy's pocket XD

Scirocco without hesitation, it's a great car. And it's really good looking from every angle, much cooler to own a Scirocco than a Golf. And as for the Focus? It's a Focus, hell no, if i want a relativley quick hot-hatch, i'd stay away from it even if it's the best one, just sounds wrong in my opinion. And the Megane? No, French, no no no....

I may be flayed for this, but I found a 2007 GT500 in the UK for 27g's, now thats a proper coupe and not just a squashed hatch, plus the added bonus of a supercharged V8. Now go on, fire away.....

Oh, God. VW are DEAD. The Focus RS is CHEAPER than the Golf R and the Scirocco R, and WAY more powerful. The megane is a LOT cheaper than the two veedubs. and pretty much just as powerful. Hmm... This WILL be interesting.

Scirocco. It's gorgeous, gives the Golfers the two fingers, isn't chavvy, and isn't French. Then there are the facts that the Scirocco's build quality is better (compared to the Focus at least; as i've only seen the Scirocco and Focus RS in the metal) and will likely hold its value better in the second-hand market. It's more distinguishable too, as meganes and golfs are just meganes and golfs. Distinguishing a 'hot' megane or Golf from a normal one is a bit like telling the difference between a BMW 318 and a 325, whereas the Scirocco R and the Focus RS are more recognisable.

I still reckon they should've made the Roc with 4weel drive. I cnt chose between the two. I like the Roc more but its slower and wont handle aswell, and i like the Golf also but its more expensive but its got more powerrrr and will be able to put more of it down but it aint as cool as the Roc. hmmmm maybe i should go for an RS

If VW want to have 2 driven wheels they why for gods sake do they choose to power the fronts... rear wheel drive would be far more fitting and would actually back up the sporting pretentions.

the roc looks better ..it looks more agressive, more purposeful, Faster. so my question is. WHY DIDNT U MAKE IT FASTER VW? WHY? seriously why did VW make the Roc look like the ultimate hot VW then out match it with a boring family hatch. if i cant have the Roc with the best drivetrain vw can put in a golf platform car then i dont want it at all. this way your choice it neutered pretty boy vs ugly powerhouse and the end result is 2 cars i dont want at all.

Who in there right mind is going to buy the golf? The sirocco is one of the best looking cars available at the moment, it truly is stunning in the flesh, and its cheaper? Less power or not, the speed limit stays the same, and its beatiful, something the golf cannot say.

I'd still pick the Scirocco R over the Golf R but would hard pressed not to pick the awesome Focus RS... but then Volkswagen might not revive the Scirocco for a very long time again..

If I had to chose between SciroccoR, GolfR, Focus RS and the Megane RS, I would chose the Scirocco. I do not know the price for Seat Leon Cupra R, but that looks interesting too.

Spec the Golf up with Recaros, DSG and SatNav, and you reach 40k. For a Golf. Did the same on the German site - 52k euros. Who are they kidding? For the most boring-looking hatch on the road. Wouldn't take the dumpy Scirocco either. Focus or Megane - that's the real choice.

Stang428: a Mustang is a bold choice for a car. If Aston Martin's are for people who will never be James Bond then Mustangs are for people who will never be Steve McQueen. Mustang's are generally bought by cretins who want to be American, which is why they go through so much trouble to have them imported - much like the Corvette. I live near this guy who has a yellow Mustang (with a V6) engine and it has a personalised numberplate saying 'V8 Paul'. 'Paul' almost permanently leaves his beloved Mustang under a cover. His driveway has space for two cars side by side. In the middle of the spaces nailed to a shed is a parking sign with two words on it: "Mustang" with an arrow pointing towards the space with the Mustang in it, and "Dodge Charger" with an arrow pointing to the other space - do you know what car is in the space? An R-reg Renault Clio. That says everything about the mentality of a Mustang driver.

Except for the front I don't really like the looks of the Scirocco. Especially the middle section looks bulky. And the Golf has 4WD where the Scirocco has lame, unsporty by definition FWD. No contest. Also, if you park a Golf in the street, it might not get scratched by Jealous Guy. But like many others, I'd go for something completely different anyway. Not the Focus for being too obvious, not the Renault for being too hardcore for everyday use. What else is there? Not Japanese, they've all gone gooey except for the MX5. Something French? Neh... Pfewee, it's tough.

Can't believe the Roc is cheaper, strange decision by VW not to give it the 4wd and the bigger price tag but give it to the humble Golf instead. Why can't they offer both cars with 4wd? Will the Golf just come in 3 door? Strange marketing decision really.

HI. I know this is not the exact point of the question but you guys are so lucky to live in a country where you can buy and use fantastic caterham, and you're aiming for bloody front wheelers like these two rubbish cars. I don't get it. I would kill for driving a brand new caterham everyday. So leave the megane, the golf or the (quite good looking) sirocco to people looking for practical, easy to live with and cheap car or buy it with a regular engine. But when it's about a sports car, I'd go for a brand new superlight R300 (with the same amount of money).

Since we aren't getting the Scirocco in any form in the US it will be the Golf R for me. Unfortunately VW of America hasn't even officially confirmed we will be getting the Golf R either. Please, please, please, and with a manual and 5 doors!

Can't switch stability control off -> boring (again)! Also the engine note does not exist, as VW decided to change from their vr6 to a generic air pump.

You englishmen are a spoiled bunch of car lovers! :) Here in Norway, the Golf GTI costs almost 500,000 kroner(50,000 pounds!), and that's before you add all the insane fees we have here. It's almost impossible to get any new car beneath 200,000 kroner. And BTW, Hammond: Since you wonder if you buy either a pencil sharpener or a car with 5,000 kroner. You don't buy either of them ^^

Firstly- sorry norwegian guy. Secondly- a hot hatch that can do 0-60 in 5.5 seconds! And like all VW it will do that amazing feat of speed in complete and utter comfort and tedium. Stick a V8 in there (im thinking chevvy's 7 litre) and RWD. also a £10,000 list price would be nice

Why in the world would anyone in their right mind get a ford over a VW; I'd personally take the Golf over the sirocco anytime, the sirocco looks good from afar, but once you get close to it, it's far from looking good. But back to the ford, yes, it does look good, but once you're done driving the first thousand miles, you're already bored with it... plus, it's american.

I'm not quite sure who would actually spend their cash on the Roc. The Focus RS is a Chav car quite simply, and if you actually have £25k in your pocket to buy one, chances are you're not a Chav. The point of the Golf isn't to be in your face and a lout. The point of the Golf R is to be understated, very fast on demand, but parkable in Tesco's without attracting a crowd of tracksuit wearing 15year olds. The Golf R by miles, space for all your stuff, faster than the RS, classy to take anywhere. What's not to like?

The VW's are more expensive than the other cars, theres a revelation!! I have owned VW's for years now and every time I find myself having to drive another manufacturers cars its like driving something made by a child, especially Fords and Fiats. The Scirocco is certainly the best looking car and the one I would have. I really like that blue that it comes in as well. I saw a Focus RS on the road the other day and I'm not surprised its driven by people in baseball caps, I think I would hide my face too rather than be seen in that Max Power mobile. It was also been driven like the person behind the wheel was running from the police or something (ie like a t**t)

I'm in the US, & we're not getting the Scirocco here at all but are supposed to be getting the Golf R sometime next year. I'm very interested in the car & have made inquiries with my local VW dealer. Since it is being produced in limited numbers, I am hoping the dealers don't push the price up too much. Anyone know how the availability of the car is in the UK & whether the dealers there are price-gouging?

Rather Megane RS or Focus RS than Golf, Scirocco's rear end is so ugly, that its not even option! Megane still fastest stock frontwheel drive car aroung The 'Ring?
