Gumpert Apollo: a new ‘Ring record?

It may have a daft name and look like an enraged, steroidal cyborg, but hell, the Gumpert Apollo Speed is fast.
So fast, in fact, that Gumpert claims to have just set a new Nurburgring production lap record, smashing the existing record by nearly 11 seconds.
In the hands of 26-year-old Florian Gruber, the Apollo Speed lapped the 14-mile Nordschliefe in 7m11.57s, punching a great big hole in the Dodge Viper’s record of 7m22.1s.
Of course, the Radical SR8 set a 6m56s lap back in 2005, but there’s some dispute over whether the British lightweight can be considered an internationally viable production car.
Maybe Gumpert’s astonishing time isn’t surprising – the Apollo Speed is motivated by a twin-turbo version of Audi’s 4.2-litre V8 putting out a giant 700bhp. And don’t forget that the sedate, standard, 650bhp non-Speed Apollo set a Top Gear lap record last year, too.
But jeez, 11 seconds is a lot, even on a circuit as long and complex as the Nurburgring. Don’t forget that all Nurburgring records are unofficial… but thankfully Gumpert has posted a video showing the lap in all its apex-clipping, Green Hell-taming glory. Take a look.
Anyone reckon he could take a few more seconds out of that record?

I have to concur, that is MEGA fast. Is there any other lap record that it COULDN'T smash?!

As ugly as Quasimodo it might be, but it's also mind-bogglingly fast. Massively impressive lap. Might be possible to take a fair few secs out of it but I felt some of those bumps from here, so there could just as easily be a truly hideous crash.

They should get the bloke who did the Nissan GTR lap record. Toshio Suzuki I think he's called... I bet he could knock a few seconds off that time

That lap actually looks a bit on the cautious side... Early braking and some shortshifts.

"Production car" needs better definition. Just because you make 1-8 cars per year and is open for taking orders is not enough production in my world view.

Okay first off the radical is still faster and thats British so its better in every way :P jk. Secondlywho the hell cares about how fat a car can go round the nurburgring. Will it get me to work any quicker. No because there is a speed limit andnobdy is going to go up to 240 mph on a public road. So this is for people who just want to brag to their friends that they have an ugly car that goes round a track faster than an American car that comes from a country that couldnt place the nurburgring on a map.

Dodge Viper?s record of 7m22.1s This remains, IMO, the real record. Both the Viper and the previous holder, the ZR1, are real world cars. They are both affordable, you can use them daily - without them falling apart - and, above all they are true production cars. The G@£§§?{[ is nothing more then a couple of pieces put together to beat a record...

I'm still waiting for Gumpert to drive it upside down. Anyway, while I completely agree that Nurburgring has no practical applications for consumers, [other than bragging rights], I think the competition of it helps automakers to push the boundaries a bit.

im not suprised, I saw this car in the flesh at TG Live in Dublin, if you think it looks hardcore in pictures you should see it up close, mean looking machine!

i quite like this car. it may be one of the fastest in the world but its not very good looking! but looks arent whats important.......... ITS SPEED!!!
