We fear we may have brought this on ourselves. Last week, when we saw the poshed-up Land Rover ‘Fire’ and ‘Ice’ special editions, we asked whether there was anything more absurd than a luxury Defender.
Well, here it is, the Hamann G-Wagen. You’ll remember Hamann for that bizarre tuned Rolls-Royce Phantom, but this makes the Roller look veritably sensible.
Let’s leave the visuals for now and look at the numbers. They are large numbers. Hamann has taken the G55 AMG – which boasts a meagre 500bhp from its 5.5-litre supercharged V8 in standard form – and whacked power up to a supercar-bothering 600bhp and 576lb ft of torque.
Which means you’re looking at an SUV that’ll hit 60mph in 5.1 seconds and top out at 162mph. With all the aerodynamics of a Nissen hut. Why? Just… why?
Why the enormous black alloys? Why the daft new front clip? Why all the carbon fibre and red quilty stuff on the inside?
And why, most importantly, do we rather like it? Are we alone?

the red stuff is a bit off, but i like it, but not in white just shows off how daft the damn thing is...but daft means itd realy upset posh cars when you burn them at the lights

nothing better than a square car with lots of bhp! like when somebody gets a wrangler and squeezes 300 bhp from it... its just glorious its like a old man with lots of money.. kinnda compensates xD

Erm.... Im not sure to be honest. Its amazing how they make the thing go so fast, but i think it s a bit umm... revolting. I was thinking of the most absurd cars that Hamann shouldnt tune up and i had an astonishing vision of a Hamann Avantime. hmm..... sorry i keep mentioning the avantime

Everyone likes black wheels on white, and everyone likes red interiors, so why not combine them? But, sorry Hamann, you can't top the Conquest Knight XV. Not even with a 600bhp AMG engine and performance to rival a Porsche Cayman S.

Hahaha I've always liked the G-Wagen and wasn't even aware there was an AMG version. I'll have one but without the red interior and white exterior. Give me a black one with normal interior and normal rims and I'll be happy to shock the hell out of anyone dumb enough to drag me in it ;-)

God, I hate Hamann. Here in the UAE they seem to love them, with certain dealers only selling their crap. We have a local company who do similar rubbish (Mansory). They had a matte black RR Phantom with a spoiler and HUGE black rims:disgusting. Just google "mansory phantom" and you can vomit too. As for the G55, I love the standard car. Is it still in production?

Well, there are far more powerfull and better looking G Wagens out there. Please Jeremy could you test the Brabus GV12 and double please, let the Stig beat it round your track. And triple please put it after on a second table board for the car that used the most petrol after circling the track.

it looks good. but mercedes really are not a proper jeep maker the defender was always the better off roader. but here is something out of curiousity how can a 5.5v8 produce 600bhp when them 2.0l engines in mitubushi evos can (apparently) produce 800bhp why not just put one of them into a g wagon. and if it is possible to get 800bhp from 2.0l if the same effort went into these big engines could you end up with mad horespower ratings coming from them
