Indy 500 crash

Fun fact: more than 2,000lbs of chicken meat are consumed at the annual Indianapolis 500 race. Not so fun fact: crashes occur.

Enter EJ Viso. During the practice session ahead of this weekend’s race, the Venezuelan driver entered turn 1, lost control and engaged in a spot of sideways action before slamming straight into the barrier at unfathomable speeds. Something exploded. Then he went backwards.

Viso’s Indy 500 racer waltzed to a halt and he was later stretchered to a hospital. Despite the impact, he was OK and suffered nothing more than a little bruising.

One of the world’s most famous races is actually Quite Dangerous too. But then you probably knew that already.

LOL look at that slide! After recovering from the initial smash - where he probably couldn't see the flames behind him and subsequently wouldn't have poohed himself - he probably just got bored with sliding along. Or thought it was fun. Weeeeee! Anyway, race drivers are very well protected these days. As you said, he only had minor bruising, and the stretcher was probably just precautionary. Besides, race drivers can't be afraid of this happening, and they know deep down it's a constant danger. That's probably part of the rush.

This is a bad crash, but nowhere near as bad as Giorgio Bartocci's smash at the Brno circuit this weekend. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X-qdqbqAd0
