Jaguar XJ Ultimate

Jaguar has revealed its most luxurious XJ... in the world. This is the XJ ‘Ultimate', and its heading for the Beijing motor show.

Now, at this point, we could simply reel off a list of the new Jaguar XJ Ultimate's rear-seat opulence*, but what's more interesting is the engine it debuts. It is a brand new 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine, and a supercharged Jag is something to get a tad excited about. Witness the 'charged 5.0-litre V8 in the XKR-S.

This new 3.0-litre is an all-aluminium unit and produces 335bhp and 331lb ft of torque, together with a Roots twin vortex supercharger mounted in the ‘V', its boost controlled by Bosch engine management software. As such, the 0-60mph is done in 5.7 seconds and the Jag will go on to a limited top speed of 155mph (exactly that of the standard 5.0-litre V8).

There's a new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot petrol engine coming to the line-up too, offered in the XF and XJ, with 237bhp and 250 torques. At 138kgs, it's the lightest Jag engine in history, thanks to aluminium construction and compact dimensions. Jag tells us these torques are higher than the ten-year old Jaguar 3.2-litre V8, so there.

Sadly though, these new forced induction units will replace the naturally aspirated engines in 2013: the 2.0-litre turbo will take the place of the N/A 3.0-litre, and the new supercharged 3.0-litre will replace the N/A 5.0-litre V8 too. There is some solace to be found though, because the new F-Type - this beauty - will get a 375bhp version of the new supercharged 3.0-litre. And that's a good thing.

*It gets (deep breath): two individually tailored rear seats with massage function, a champagne chiller and flutes between the seats, two eight-inch hi-res screens on the back of the front seat headrests, two 3rd gen iPads and keyboards docked in the front seat backs, a solid aluminium business table, a 15-channel 20-speaker, Meridian surround sound system, wireless headphones, 20in forged alloy wheels, subtly redesigned front air intakes, new exhaust tailpipes finished in stainless steel and ‘Ultimate' badging slapped across the XJ's aluminium body.
