Video: Block’s ice-cold Fiesta
Yes, we know that - having done no more than read the title of this story - some of you are already aiming a bolus of virtual phlegm at our comments boxes, no doubt accusing us of being obsessed with Ken ‘Gymkhana' Block and his powersliding exploits.
You may have a point. But, just before you comment, take 147 seconds out of your day to watch this video, which shows Ford's Fiesta rally car - the one that will compete in the WRC proper in 2011 - sliding around a snow stage in Michigan.
Not because of Mr Block's indubitable driving skillz, but because it's a great chance to see - and hear - the future of WRC. It looks and sounds good, we think.
Right, you've heard us out and watched the video. Now feel free to dole out the Block-love abuse...

Block was out of the rally by stage 4 (out of 20 stages), he was in 3rd place when a mechanical failure in the suspension took him out of the race. Having watch the Sno*Drift rally twice I can tell you he's much better than any wanna be driver, but he's no match for the veterans of WRC. Travis Pastrana is the best bet out of anyone in Rally America.

Sounds very like a supercharged engine as opposed to one with a turbo. Some man though, that ken block chap!

This is not a real 2011-spec WRC car. They will have 1600cc turbo engines. Not 2000cc turbo like in this movie.

The speed is mine boggeling and the engine noise in the car doesn't sound normal, maybe what we're hearing in the car is the drive train cause the outside exhaust sound is awesome..

Looks amazing however the noise sounds too fidgety, I prefer the current WRC noise.

That car has nothing to do with the future wrc cars. It is a Swedish rallycross car with a longitudially-mounted turbo engine and it has a five door body. The future wrc Ford is Fiesta S2000 which has a transverse mounted naturally aspirated engine and a three door body. Next year it should have a 1.6 litre turbo engine. Btw Mikko Hirvonen has scored the first triumph for Fiesta S2000 by winning the legendary Monte Carlo rally.

Block drives Ford because Subaru does not take part in World Rally Championship. Block will drive 7 wrc-events in 2010 and his ride will be Ford Focus RS WRC.

Having just watched some of the rally on saterday night i can tell you that the track was pure ICE, being from Michigan we just had some warmer weather (in the mid 30's) a week before. That night the Temp was around -6 F. those speeds require some talent. The 199 car was looking really fast as well.

Did anyone else see the deer crossing the road at 2:18-2:19? I live in Michigan, and you have to keep a sharp eye out for them. :-)

The track's so-so.. studless tires won't really matter with just slight turns and mostly straights. Still have to be convinced by this Ken Block, up against Seb, Miko, Petter and others he's got a lot of humble pie to eat. I'm more interested in that odd noise coming from the Fiesta than with Block's driving. I can't work out if that is that noise is coming from the actual engine, 'box, or turbo. Given it's rallying, i'd bet that's the turbo...
