Lewis Hamilton

This is an impassioned plea for reasoned, calm, objective judgement. Set aside your personal affiliations and resist the temptation to engage in a personality discussion. This is a simple case of right or wrong.

Did Lewis Hamilton's botched pass on Felipe Massa on lap 12 of the 2011 Singapore GP deserve a drive-through penalty?

We're not asking for your opinion on Hamilton or Massa's respective personas in or outside of F1, nor on their apparent ongoing feud. We're simply asking that if you were a steward and your opinion was called upon, how would you judge it?

Answers below. Don't worry if you missed the race, you already know who won.

What do you think?

First. Personally I think that the drive through was fair. Lewis caused Massa to have a puncture due to the contact and as such he should be penalised. If the puncture had not occured then it would have been harsh.

No idea... I did watch the race, but it's difficult to judge from your sofa... Like every sports, there's some rules, and the stewards are there to make sure everybody follow them... Let them do their job...

Definitely not a drive through penalty - but Massa having a puncture gave the stewards an excuse to apply one. Schumies accident was just considered a racing incident, which was essentially the same thing. I know he couldn't receive a drive through as he wasn't driving any more, but as far as I'm aware it hasn't been looked into by the teams or stewards.

IF Massa didn't get a puncture, Hamilton shouldn't get a drive through. because Hamilton effectively ended Massa's chances at any significant position, he deserves a punishment. take it into a real world situation, someone steals 1 wheel off your Ferrari at the supermarket. does the person who did it deserve punishing, or only if they steal the whole car?

Personally, i think it is unfair and completely illogical. Both drivers paid the price with pretty much the same amount of time lost. Hamilton lost even more time because of a new front wing compared to just tire replacements for Massa. This is expected in overtaking. You cannot always have clean overtakes. This is racing. If the stewards want to award penalties for such incidents, then they might as well stick to qualifying. At their point of view, they should have also awarded penalties to Schumacher and Kobayashi(in Belgium). Why didnt they?. It was the same scenario. Schumacher paid the price for his mistake. Kobaysahi paid the price for his move in Belgium by going for a pit stop. Hamilton paid for his mistake by crashing out in Belgium. Now, it was his own mistake and it is up to him to salvage the remaining of the race. And that incident ending Massa's chances is pure rubbish. Hamilton managed to finish 5th despite a penalty and why couldnt Massa have done the same?.
