Video: LF-A tears it up
Civilisations have risen and fallen, continents have shifted, Bruce Forsyth has celebrated the big one-triple-zero... and finally the Lexus LF-A is nearly here.
The 550bhp V10 supercar will debut in Tokyo next week, with a price tag somewhere in the £330,000 region.
Erm, yes. £330,000. That's quite a bit of cash for something that ostensibly rivals the McLaren MP4-12C-38DD-thing and Ferrari 458 Italia.
Then again, it does sound Really Quite Good, as this video of the track-spec LF-A in action at Motorsport Japan 2009 proves.
Turn up your speakers and enjoy the sound of a big angry Japanese V10 getting snarly on the overrun and then let us know - are you finally letting yourself get excited about the LF-A?
And, as a side point, don't you think it looks just a bit... twitchy on the limit?

I was there in person, standing on the opposite side - I can honestly say I wasn't impressed. Then again, a Super GT race spec GT-R had just laid waste to tires (and my ears) immediately before, so I might not have been hearing clearly...

Ehm..it looks awful..even the road version looks awful...it only has details but it doesn't make up a whole. Even if it was faster than a 458 Italia(which I doubt) then I'd STILL take the 458 Italia. Paying 330k for a stripped out toyota with some power? Not ty.

I like this car, I like the looks and I love the noise, but for that price there are a lot of things I'd rather have.

i really really like this car, its A LOT better lloking then tht ugly Ferrari 458 Italia and it sounds great. but it does look a bit snatchy twitch twitch on the limit, but is that a racing version? maybe the road going will be a tad softer

Looks and sounds fantastic but...Lambo will sell you 550bhp of gorgeous V10 (as will Audi of course) for rather a lot less. It is, after all, still a Toyota...

Why are so many people saying "oh I wouldn't spend that much on a Lexus" and "it's still a Toyota"? What if it's like the original LS: better than its competition? What if it's as good as a comparable Ferrari once it's finished? We were a Mercedes family since 1992, who switched to Lexus in 2001. We've bought 5 since then and currently have four. They're MUCH better constructed and MUCH more reliable than the competition. Just because a brand is OLD doesn't mean they make cars well NOW! Toyota has been around since the 1930s anyway! People who judge machines on objective criteria like quality or performance might actually purchase a car like this. How many people who post on here, know anything objective about the cars you're bashing or praising or have even test-driven them? I think the LF-A is a great addition to their product lineup. They should put a V12 in the LS600 and LF-A instead of a silly V8 hybrid and a not too prestigious V10.

that car is too deer for a lexus. its also hideously ugly and while it sounds better than a diesel it does not sound as good as the old alfa v6. for that sort of money the new ferrarri is far better at least it has the badge of one of the most desirable car brands in the world the lexus has a badge that could be on an oven or fridge and it would make no difference.

What you just said pretty much explains why people wear clothes made in third world sweatshops and think they're wearing something good because of the brand written across the chest. Get real! I think it looks and sounds brilliant... you cant tell what the sound is like over the internet; i bet if you were really there with it you'd be able to feel the power through the floor. It's a halo model but it just seems too pricey. I think Toyota would do better to bring back the Supra and stop messing about with things on 8 inch wheels that look like kitchen appliances.

Invisiblepigeon, you're absolutely right. A Lexus won't fall appart, the build quality will be excellent, and it will run when you need it... which is rare in supercar world. Remember JC's ford GT? Useless... The price is very high, that's clear... but anyway, if you have money to spend on a supercar, i'm not sure the price is the first thing you're looking at... For me, I'll have the money to get a PS3 and Granturismo5... so I'll try that and the 458, and a lot more... and drive my crap little car in the real world... which should be enough.

Don't get me wrong, it sounds great, you can hear the relationship to the Toyota F1 engine in there. However, not the best sounding engine.The triple rotary Mazda Furai engine will always win!

Well, it looks like the typical japanese sports GT. However, it very much sounds like a DTM car. Maybe they should join DTM, since that sucks with just Audi and Merc.

Let's just hope the new Exprit will sound like this as it uses the same V10. And it will handle better, look better (if the mock ups are anything to go by) and be way, way cheaper!! You could buy a 458 with the change from your £300,000....

Will anyone pay supercar price for a lexus, toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda? Not many I suppose, no matter if the car is better or worse than the established brand. Those who appreciate engineering excellence will appreciate a car well engineer, those who not, will find call them cynical. Car which need after sale engineering are characterful. You need to change the cooling system because it overheat it self, you change the everything, because they dont seem to work for long, and it issssssssssss so involving. Too bad, the Jap do not know how to engineer car which involve after sale engineering. BTW, the jap are also very lousy in their marketing, juz look at the video, it seem like they are prompting the car to boy racer, but with a rich dad. Anyway those who can afford it may get all type of supercars, some are for presenting themself, some are for having fun.

That's clearly not a Lexus promotional video. Their target demographic is NOT boy racers with rich dad's! This is a proper supercar for the people who buy supercars: rich old men who drive them slow, or people with oil money who drive them fast. Japan hasn't produced a car like this before. The only thing close is the Acura NSX from the early 90's and the Nissan GT-R, but both of those cars are a category below the LF-A and don't go over 200mph.

The LF-A is being designed to be a revolutionary supercar. It beat the GT-R on the ring and that's just the prototype.

i know you all say that I will say "it's just a bigger overpriced Toyota Supra" . . . and it is . . . it doesn't look elegant like an Aston, passionate like a Ferrari, fast like a Porsche . . . in fact the video made the car look like those tuned Toyotas & Subarus you see in X-Games . . . you'll never see an Aston, Ferrari or Porsche dressed up like some street racer you see in the movies . . . the Lexus LF-A is pointless . . . isn't Toyota loosing money because of the recession??? this car is out-of-touch with the times . . .

Personally, I think it looks great, sounds wonderful and is massively over-priced. Yet, it must be recognised that the LF-A is only going to be sold from one dealership in Europe, and there will be less made then the Ferrari 458 etc. It is perhaps this exclusivity that Lexus were thinking of when they gave it that price tag...
