Martin Brundle

Martin Brundle has announced that he will race in next year's 24 Hours of Le Mans race with his son, Alex.

The 52-year-old ex-Formula One driver will pilot a Nissan-engined Greaves Motorsport LMP2 prototype for 2012's historic 80th running at La Sarthe, and follows in the moustachioed footsteps of father-son duo Nigel and Leo Mansell, who also competed at Le Mans together in 2009.

And the Greaves car has form: with that 4.5-litre Nissan V8, it won the LMP2 class at this year's race and finished eighth overall in the hands of drivers Karim Ojjeh, Olivier Lombard and Tom Kimber-Smith. Sounded ace, too.

Brundle said: "This is an unexpected pleasure, heightened by the fact I will be teammates with my son. I'm eagerly anticipating a very special feeling when handing the car over to Alex during one of the world's greatest motor races.

"Class victory in front of the fanatical Le Mans spectators is the goal," he added.

Alex Brundle, 21, drove at this year's official test day and was the leading British driver in this year's F2 championship, so he's pretty handy too.

And judging by the way Daddy Brundle hunts down racing drivers on his ‘gridwalk' as an F1 pundit, we can expect big things for next year...
