Mazda’s mini-SLR
The next few years, we’re told, will be all about downsizing. Smaller house, smaller family, smaller dog.
Which is why Mazda has created a mini SLR Stirling Moss for the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.
They call it the MX-5 Superlight, and it’s a perfect replica of McLaren-Mercedes’ elongated speedster… but exactly three-eights the size.
Maybe. Mazda hasn’t actually admitted the Superlight is an SLR Stirling Moss for mini-people – they simply describe it as ‘a pure show car… with a radical exterior design requiring no windshield, and sporty chassis settings’ – but just look at it.
Not, we must stress, that looking like the SLR Stirling Moss is a bad thing. Far from it. Mazda hasn’t released any technical details on the Superlight yet, but we wouldn’t expect its underpinnings to differ greatly from the current MX-5.
However, Mazda has gone to pains to stress that the Superlight is merely a concept and won’t reach production. A shame – maybe it’s those mysterious wheels which appear to generate their own sunlight?

why leave space for a number plate on a concept?

I never understand why anyone would want a roadcar without windscreen. Spitting out flies is not my favorite pastime. But I'm all for superlights, as long as it isn't about sodas. @120Y: at least they left out the doorhandles...

And the wingmirrors! But the DS-mirror on top of the dash is nicely retro.

And cue moans and jokes about the Japanese copying Europe. It's still in interesting way to celebrate 20 years of being the small sportscar benchmark, better than just launching a limited run or someth- oh crud. They've done that as well. I'm sure they'll take this to some MX-5 Owner's Club to please hardcore MX-5 fans (read: men who are boring at parties) who spend the day debating which model year was best. In similar fashion to the Golf GTi W12.

johnb2k9, the non-windscreeny goodness marks it out as a speedster, like '50s racers and stuff. Also, the no. plate is there because it has the standard bootlid (I would guess). Plus it would look wierd without it. Also, perhaps there are no door handles so you have to jump in like Austin Powers?

I love the look of that, except for the bonnet. It just doesn't look right at the front.

Not in production, shame, but all you need is an angle grinder and some fibreglass, and off you go!
