McLaren F1 is back
Ron Dennis today announced that McLaren will launch its P11 supercar, the successor to the awesome F1 (pictured), in 2011.
Speaking at the team’s Woking HQ, Dennis confirmed that he is to end all involvement with McLaren’s F1 squad in order to concentrate on its new sports car business, McLaren Automotive.
The P11 – a mid-engined rival for the Ferrari F430 – will be the first product of McLaren Automotive, and indeed the first all-McLaren car since 1992, as the British firm is cutting ties with Mercedes.
Dennis said that the McLaren range of ‘super sports cars’ will start at around £100,000 – though the P11 is expected to cost nearer £130,000 – and will include a 2+2 seater as well as the two-seater P11.
He has lofty ambitions for his fledgling company: McLaren Automotive expects to build 1000 cars in its first full year of production from a new UK-based factory, rising to 4000 cars by 2014 – rather more than the mere 106 F1s. Dennis said this would provide ‘the potential for up to 800 skilled jobs’.
At the moment, details of the P11 remain sketchy, but Top Gear was able to glean that the supercar will feature a cab-forward stance, retractable rear spoiler and a flat underbody. McLaren has built 36 prototypes so far.
However, we don’t know what it’ll be called: Dennis confirmed that P11 was merely a codename for the project. So, over to you: what should the new McLaren supercar be called?

I think it will be amazing hopefully there will be a convertible option aswell. Thats saying I would rather have the hard top version especially with the british weather lol What about the name Mclaren Bruce (after the guy who the racing team was named after) thats saying probably would be too similar to what ferrari did with the Ferrari Enzo

It so disappointing and frustrating that it's gonna be a F430 rival. A McLaren should be an out of the world beast that set world records for the next decade or so, a car without any rival, not just another mundane 100K supercar you can find in your local Tesco lot.

I agree with ian, if you only make a new type of car ever 3 years or so, and all of them are mentally fast, why make one a rival for a 430? You have to aim higher because normal people would just then buy the 430, mainly, because it's a ferrari! McLaren should just jo mental as they always do and build a Ron Dennis Type R!

Why would McLaren do this? So they can make money! Notice the production goal of thousands of cars. It's a business move, rather than a car purist one. Sure, it's different from what they've done in the past, but it's smart to be gearing up to sell some sweet, attainable supercars just as the global economy starts picking up. Right now they can hire smart, talented people on the cheap, and by the time these are ready to roll out, people will be able to afford them again. Besides, there are plenty of companies doing "mental" right now. Koenigseggggg comes to mind. Or any of the myriad Viper tuners out there.

I bet it's an F430 rival because McLaren know that when they build a powerful mid-V8 car, it beats Ferraris! Trying to repeat Formula 1 success on the road; they should call it the McLaren MP4/Street (like MP4/23, geddit?). That or Macca are going to war with Merc's SLS like I thought.

Does anyone think there could be some bad Merc and Mc blood and maybe this is more of a Merc SLS thrasher than a 430 competitor? After all it is the Mercedes SLS now, not the McLaren SLR, anymore.

The thing is, with all their development & understanding of performance from their F1 development, they could easily manufacture an outstanding car within the £130,000 price range that could potentially destroy everything within that class & it will probably deal a few blows outsight of its weight class ! the F1 was made in 1992, it's a car with a superd drag coefficient a superb engine (normally aspirated capable of pushing the car to a top speed of 243 mph) If their talking about "mass" production compared to the F1 volumes then the cost will obviously be less, computer models have taken away from expensive development costs and with a further 17 years of knowledge behind them this is one car I can't wait to see

I think it's fantastic seeing McLaren making road cars, but it's going to be hard to live up to the legend of the McLaren F1. I think if their aim is to compete with the F430 they might be forgetting a more local rival as the new Lotus Esprit will be out by then. Not to mention the quantities they're talking about aren't really sustainable for a car in that price range. They should be able to look at Ferrari or Lamborghini numbers for comparison.

Why Mclaren instead of making a rival to 430 , make a rival to the Bugatti w16 ??? i mean the old MclarenF1 is been for a long time the fastest production car in the world and the Bugatti toke the lead because of Bugatti 1001 hp , then now Mclaren have the chance to get that back to it !! not to make a car with just 500 hp .. McLaren is over. But is hanging on somehow... Ascari is the way forward, in terms of British hyper cars everyone says how epic the old F1 is...but the damned Datsun beat it round Nurburg, this P11 will have to be indescribably... and it won?t be. without some hidden backing from somewhere, and while someone mentioned a SLR beater, the conventional SLR is now decommissioned and as for the Sterling moss, while being a Merc is out of McLaren?s league for A. coolness B. heritage C. just look at it D. rarity It should be called the ?McLaren, how much was that Ferrari??

me again...Mikeado I think you'll find its Ferrari with the constructors cup not McLaren Mercedes...and F2 does work nicely?.on another note Brawn hire them people back and get me a road car damn it! I hope the next F1 will be better but like all other remakes of legendary cars it might not be as good and wont have that same feel and that is not you want- you dont want it lose those features you want to have more which makes it better and it then shows it is better and it has to look better.

if this car can become anything like its predecessor, then it might just pull everyone's heads out of the sand and make the world watch as England does what it does best, and surprise the hell out of everyone else with the standard of our manufacturing and car heritage. The F1 shattered the competition when it was launched, and now this one should not aim to beat the f430, it should aim to atomise it. Perhaps the "low" aim is just a target that will make it even more of a surprise when it is launched and blows everything else away. It may not come with the pricetag of the F1, and it probably wont go like it either, but not many cars do even now, after so many years of progress. Maclaren just have to come in and do what they did before. The company should be aiming at coming in and doing what ford did with their gt40 all those years ago, except hopefully this maclaren will handle better.

Hmm i think i am one of those people who just isn't that excided about an upcomming Mclaren F1 car 2 years from now. Maybe I'm just not a fan - and to be honest the last one looked a bit dull and snobby due to the fact that it's called a Mclaren F1 .. Make it interesting and call it something hilarious, like the Mclaren F2 for instance .. maybe not so creative, but it isen't really a creative car so it might just work.

Some of you here are getting the wrong idea. For a start most of us know that McLaren does indeed have the technology to make the fastest car in the world seeing as they held the record for a good 10 years . In order to do that again they would be working on a smaller scale in terms of the amounts of cars they produce and therefore the profit margins wouldn't be so great and also Ron Dennis being a clever man probly saw the recession coming a mile off and thought now is not the time to make the worlds fastest car re-happen. The hole reason it is aimed to be an F430 competitor and priced between 100k-130k is to appeal to a more affordable market but still u have to be reasonably wealthy in order to buy a car in that price bracket anyways. What McLaren are doing is clever and its good business and the timing for the release is good as well jus as the economy gets going again. McLaren have it on lockdown and ferrari have it coming to em! Maybe the McLaren F.

I think McLaren P11 is a good enough name anyway. And as for the new model being pitched at the F430, fair play to McLaren. Just because they made a record-breaker and now the record's been reclaimed, McLaren shouldn't feel under pressure to make another to snatch back victory. Jaguar didn't when the F1 beat the XJ220. You never know, once McLaren gets to grips with mass production and gains the knowledge of what makes a good car outstanding, they may apply all that to a new record smasher.

Im glad there making a new 1 because now a days we have more components and more powerful engines we can put in the car, i think its going to be twice as good as the old version, i also like the fact that the price of the mclaren is much lower than the older version

i don't care what anyone thinks. i'm just glad to see mclaren coming back. it's been a while since they stuck their oar in. they might not be able to compete with these high end performance cars like the veyron or koenigsegg. but it still good to see a familliar friendly face coming back into the sports car world. i hope all goes well for them. i really do.
