C63 AMG: now with added SLS
Having just released its first in-house supercar – the excellently gullwinged SLS – has Merc’s AMG department gone a bit power crazy?
AMG has announced an upgraded version of the ballistic C63 AMG, a car we’ve never felt to be lacking in power.
They call it the Performance Package Plus, and it puts out a mighty 487bhp, 30bhp more than the standard C63 and just a few horsepower less than Merc’s DTM racer.
The power upgrade comes courtesy of a load of oily bits borrowed from the SLS. New forged alloy pistons, new crank rods and a lightweight crankshaft contribute to a 0-62mph time of just 4.4 seconds, with the C’s top speed cruelly limited to 155mph.
The only visual modification comes in the shape of a carbon fibre spoiler, with a bit of extra leather and Alcantara on the inside.
But here’s the really good bit: the Performance Package Plus will be available in both saloon and estate form. A family estate packing 487bhp? This AMG power trip is just fine by us…

ive had the pleasure to be passenger in one of these. im not a fan of the merc's but i was impressed. mighty quick. the ride is a bit on the rough side with that performance pack and the sound of it is far from decent. its phenomenal. best merc ive seen yet

i looked at the american amg site and the performance package for us doesnt include more power just a whole bunch of add on bits but speed does go up to 174mph which is good but i would still like the 30 more hp.

the old car was a lunatic and ridiculously tail-happy... i can't even imagine how bad this one will be... if it's now available with a manual, then these foibles are worth it. but it it's an auto, i'll stick to the m3.

merkur, it's an emissions thing. You can find a company to de-limit any German car with ease. Now take your finget off 'shift'.

If they've put lots of SLS bits under the bonnet, why not complete the package with 4 gullwing doors? 30bhp extra probably won't change the car that much, the power will just seem a bit more urgent and eager to smoke the tyres (than it already is).

Only if Mercedes could strike the right balance of power and finesse/handling then I might just but one. Still love the SLS design though, but BMW will almost alway be streets ahead of Merc. Only Audi comes pretty close to Bimmer unless you want a Supercar.
