Evo FQ-330 goes flappy
Good news for clutch-haters: the Evo X FQ-330 is now available with Mitsubishi's flappy-paddle dual-clutch gearbox.
The SST gearbox was previously only available on the standard, sedate 295bhp Evo – the FQ-330 got a five-speed manual as standard. But Mitsubishi has somehow worked out how to wedge the dual-clutch box into the 329bhp FQ-330 without rapidly creating a million shards of splintery metallic transmission.
In dual-clutch mode, the FQ-330 will hit 62mph in 4.4 seconds – a full 0.3 seconds quicker than the 295bhp Evo. If you’re wondering what that 'FQ' stands for, that figure might give you a hint...
The only fly in the clutch-free ointment in the price: the FQ-330 with dual-clutch gearbox will cost you £36,000, a full three grand more than the manual FQ-330.
Dangerously expensive? Or a relative bargain for something that’ll show a BMW M3 Coupe a clean pair of heels? We can’t decide…

I'd like to hear Jeremy's opinion on Impreza getting flappy paddles :)) I think it's somehow pointless, especially with this pricetag..

It's not an impreza woosh, it's an Evo. And I don't see what Jezza's moaning about - VW's DSG and Ferrari's semi-autos seem to be brilliant, and reversing with them isn't nearly the faff I feared they would be. His complaints seem valid only towards the stupid Mercedes version they use on the Smart Roadster and Audi's old TT. Which is ironic, given Jezza's garage always has at least one Merc in it.

The new EVO is a great car, it has more horse power than the last but the only new bit of kit is the gear box, so whats the point?

It's all well and good - and bloody obvious - that it accelerates faster than the lower-powered SST, but is it faster than a manual FQ-330 by any real amount? It should be for the extra £3000. Dual clutch flappy paddles are the ones that work - the GT-R, Veyron and various VWs and Audis have all had their 'boxes praised - it's the automated manuals that are usually rubbish. Jezza's just still stuck on early paddleshifts and how crap they were. Plus the whole "taking you away from the driving" argument.

The thing I'd like about the SST Evo X is accelerating from, say, the M6 toll gate, just planting my right foot and watching the speedometer dial rise completely regardless of what the revs are doing, because the gear change is so quick. Constant acceleration ftw!

EVO X is obsolete. B8 AUDI S4 IS BETTER AND CHEAPER, actually. Seriously.

Even though it only has 329hp, it is called the FQ - 330 but its just okay because it sounds better than FQ - 329

As long as the flappy paddle is better than Astons attempts then it just makes it even more of a drivers car than it was already.

I'd like to have known what the lap time is for the FQ Evo X, when they had it on last year, but the stig only drove the standard one. If we want definitive answers, they will have to show a comparison. The improved skid pad along with a more advanced drivetrain would probably make it a contender, and I would bet it would beat the IX with the same power along with a lot of others. I think the standard one was just a little weak and was made with the FQ line in mind. I know in the US, people get FQ400 power a in SST Evo for a about 500 quid (700 dollars) and it gets 12 sec 1/4 miles which is on par with the M3, though it will outmaneuver one any day.
