Stunning Merc which kickstarted four-door coupe trend gets 'grrrr' makeover

New Mercedes CLS

The King is dead; long live the King. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the all-new Mercedes CLS-Class.

The Godfather of the swoopy four-door coupe niche - a niche it started way back in 2004 - gets a full makeover and will make its public debut at next month's Paris motor show.

The sexy CLS retains its handsome, matinee-idol good looks but with added venom and some 'grrrr'; the face is reminiscent of the SLS AMG, the headlamps get 71 LEDs, and the arches are flared which, says Mercedes, ‘resemble the powerful stance of a predator waiting to pounce'. All it needs is a hitman with a silenced 9mm and you're there.

Potential mafia bosses - and indeed carpet warehouse owners - get a wraparound cockpit and are bathed in a variety of high-end materials including 1.6mm thick leather, satin, wood and high-gloss finishes to the surfaces.

Needless to say, this car is more about show than go, as Mercedes has yet to confirm an engine line-up. But you can expect a range of efficient diesels and a mind-melting AMG version, potentially the same 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 first seen in the CL63 AMG...

We'll bring you more details on this mafia staple as soon as it breaks, but for now, what do you think of the new Merc CLS? Does it still look like the daddy?

I still like the first one best, but this follow up still looks very good.

@ Toast 247, I agree that the original was better; Mercedes' new design direction with particularly angular front ends will probably not age well.

dont like much this one its to "grrrr" for me and doesnt look nice in a 4 door saloon it should be simple with understated lines so you can annoy other people with a 4 seater rocket (if it has a powerfull engine)...to flashy for me plus dont like the front especially the area where the fog lights are and the rear as i said too flashy for me at least!!!!

ITs so gorgues. Like Compare this one to the old one. The old one already wa exciting and absolutly gorgeous. But now its rather your EX-wife. And this is just the hot young version. Anyways, like what they've done. Cant wait for the AMG version and when you test that one.
