Pan’ and the family
A philosophical teaser to kick off your Monday: is the Panamera a real Porsche?
Well, it's a bit awkward-looking and goes like stink, so we'd say... yeah, that'll be a Porsche alright. A big-arsed Porsche, no question, but certainly more in keeping with the family DNA than the Cayenne.
But the guys at Zuffenhausen, it would seem, are a bit touchy about the is-the-Panamera-a-real-Porsche question. So they've gathered together 50 of their finest cars in history - and it is a fine history indeed - in a glamorous-yet-ever-so-slightly-desperate attempt to prove that the Panamera is, indeed, one of the family.
And here's what happened.
Impressive stuff, but didn't you think it looked just a tiny bit... computer generated?
Us too. So Porsche has also released a quick video showing the ‘making of' its family tree ad. Which, if we're being honest, we like even more than the advert itself.
Look! Lovely old Le Mans racers inching off the back of trucks! Spluttering flat-sixes! Lots of delivery men! What more could you want?
Which prompts a far more interesting question: which one of those 50 (OK, 47 or thereabouts) lovelies would you take home?
Want to comment on this?
hmmm...looks like more than 50 to me...It still doesn't look computer generated though.

Definitely computer "enhanced" in bits - and not only does the Panamera look way out of place, but I love the absence of a Cayenne in that video. Ironically the Panamera has more in common with the cayenne then any of the cars in this video, imho

Hmmm, I think whatever I chose would have "GT" in it somewhere, be it the GT1, GT3 RS, Carrera GT, or whatever. Just because they tend to be the most Porsche-ish cars. Rather unlike the Panamera. But aren't they trying hard to make "long front-engined 911 with 4-doors" seem romantic and amazing? Some great sounds in there too.

Without watching all that family stuff and reading previous comments - Porsche has serious "image" problem and I wouldn't buy or take home any (except maybe 914)

i actually don't mind the panamera, yea its a bit ugly, but to have a porsche thats practical as well as fast then i can understand why people might want it. problem is i can see it depreciating like the big ferrari's (612 for example) which will be a negative against it. if i was to have a porsche id have to have a 911 gt3 RS in that weird green colour they do :D

The Panamera is growing on me. It's got something other cars don't have. What could it be? Oh, I know, it does not look like all other cars. True, it is not the prettiest thing on a 2-D surface. But in a world of Micras, Mondeos, Focuses, and Polos, it will possibly stand out.

I can't decide! Propably an old 80s 911 Racer and Road version, the Le Mans cars, especially the modern yellow one, and some other stuff. Good ad, and I like the Panamera.

For a classic sports car, you can't beat the E-type, and if I wanted to take one of those porsches home, it would be the 997. No sign of James May anywhere, though.

356 B for me, I'm probably just a masochist at heart. I note they forgot the 924, the 944 and the 914 in this one, or at least I didn't see any of them. Shame, I've always thought the 914 was one of there more interesting cars.

funny, how they only show back- and middle engined cars in a film selling a front engined car...? Whatever was the problem with the 944 968, and especially with the 928 - some of the fines front-engined sports cars there is? I would take any of them, if given, but prolly an early 911, or the 914 (partly visible in the second video) would be most to my taste - especially, as i can see myself driving them, something i wouldn't dare in, say, a Gulf Porsche racer.....

The 928 shows up at :31 (might be a 944, but I'm pretty sure its a 928) and the Cayenne at :37. My dad's got a '72 911 RS replica - and that's plenty of Porsche for me :) While the panamera is a bit of a fat arse, its still loads better than the Cayenne, ugh I hate that monstrosity.

The Panamera? Uncompromised? You have got to be kidding. It's as compromised as the BMW 5 Grand Turd. As for which of these I'd pick, I'd pick a 928. Mainly because it's not a 911, therefore not devalued by every new model including all non-911 Porsches being built today, adding more insult to injury. The claims made about no two body panel being the same from one 911 to the next don't make a diddly-ifference. It still looks the same. Porshce has gone from being a German manufacturer trying to build their interpretation of the perfect sports car to a business timidly tweaking a design executed by better men many years ago and hoping that kind of pedigree has enough cache to flog whales like the Cayenne and the Panamera.

I went to Germany on holidays, just came back. The family I was staying with was obsessed with cars, so it was good. As well as having a ride in a Nissan GTR in the mountains of Bavaria getting driven around in a 'Vette C6/X6/CayenneGTSLimitedEdition/Sclass/letsnotmakeanyonejealousshallwe there was a Panemara I went in one morning. It is full of buttons and sounds nice when going fast, but it felt very strange to see two seats behind me. It had a Porsche badge....it's ugly.....expensive.....fast.....luxurious.....German.....fat.... so it must be a Porsche.

A simple early '80's 911 Carrera, no rearwing, no turbolookalike thingies, 3.0 or 3.2, with Fuchs wheels of course, in a dark metallic color or skyblue, will do nicely for me.

@Marric: That's a 928. Also, now that the Cayenne has been spotted, I love how they put it far away and to the edge of the picture, where people would be less likely to see it. Or is it just coincidence?

Great commercial! It really looks almost like virtual reality - as good as it is produced. Its stunning to see how much bigger the Panamera is then everything around it. For me the Carrera GT is one of the most beautiful cars ever produced, for sure the Porsche dream car to me. The Panamera? Different kind. Its not a real sports car - but a GT for business and even family. Perfect for the every day use. The lease rates are real world - compared to Aston´s or Masis - they are cars only for the weekend. That´s not really comparable. I saw the Panamera first time now in dark green - impressive! Looks extremely fast....

It's absolutely awful to consider it a true Porsche. If I wanted a sedan or suv, I'd buy something alot less expensive - even if money was not the issue. I think I would laugh if I saw someone driving this down the road. I realize the only consistent thing in life is change; however, I believe Porsche should stay true to it's roots and STAY a sports car. So what if it handles like a sport model should - who is going to drive a Porsche like it should be with their children tucked in the back. Awful.

Beautiful ad indeed, but the Panamera doesn't look like it belongs in there with all those race monsters. It's like a big "can you spot the (obvious) odd one out" puzzle... I have to say that I quite like the car though, I have seen one in the metal a few months ago and it looks better than in photos or on film. By the way, how much was the insurance for this ad production?
