Peugeot's SR1 and 5 concepts gave us hope. The 5008 helped us believe. And today, with the first images of the 508, it has become definitively so: Peugeot has finally ditched its bug-eyed, Joker-mouthed design language.
Not that we're claiming the 508 is an irresistible piece of automotive design, you understand. In fact, we'd probably describe it as... anonymous. But anonymous is better than those gurning, orphan-scaring front ends, right?
Peugeot says that the 508 - a big new saloon that replaces the 407 and 607, and sits between the two in terms of length - 'introduces the marque's new design look... elegant and timeless and full of French chic'.
We don't know many technical details, but we do know that the 508 will be revealed to the public at the Paris show in October before going on sale in Europe at the start of 2011.
It will also be built in China and, like the Renault Latitude - another big French luxo-thingy revealed recently - is expected to sell well in Asian markets.
Peugeot has confirmed that a 200bhp hybrid version of the 508 will be made available after launch, with emissions below 100g/km of CO2.
For now, what do you think of Peugeot's new design direction? A welcome move to sleeker shapes, or just too anonymous?
Peugeot goes smooth
New 508 saloon demonstrates French firm’s new design direction. It is significantly less nightmarish

Really? In the words of James May, nobody gives a rats arse about cars like this. No one on this website anyway. Looks like a US market Camry/Accord/Hyundai/Kia etc. Boring and no doubt unreliable too.

Don't like it. In my opinion, the 407 was better looking and that almost looks ugly to me. Then again, what do I know. I reckon it'll age very well, though and in a few years time we'll be complimenting it's lines and curves.
