Geneva show: Peugeot SR1
Peugeot doesn't do big swanky roadsters. And even if it did, they wouldn't look like this. At least up to now.
The official line is that Peugeot won't make a car based on this concept, but after about five minutes of repeated badgering, the design boss of Peugeot and Citroen, Jean-Pierre Ploué, said that well, maybe, ummmm, it wasn't impossible. Maybe he just said it to get us off his back, but he said it: "We're looking at it seriously. Sooner or later we'll have to replace the 407 Coupe."
But for now the SR1's number one job is to show that Peugeot is shifting its general design direction, and some of these lines and shapes will make their way across the range.
Sure enough, a few yards away, there's the ‘5 by Peugeot' concept, a largely undisguised model of the 407 replacement. Which will be called 508. It has a SR1-ish nose. So it's farewell then to the smeared-upwards headlamps and slack-jawed grille of the current Peugeots. Shed no tears.
Peugeot's sister company Citroen has transformed its design these past few years. And now former Citroen design chief Jean-Pierre Ploué is shapes boss for both brands. He says it's now Peugeot's turn to move forward. But Peugeots will differ from Citroens, he says. "Citroen is about surprise. Peugeot is athleticism and precision and elegance."
Peugeot's design head, Gilles Vidal, did the SR1 and he says this new language is about reflecting the precision in how a Pug drives (well, the best of them do).
Like any self-respecting concept at Geneva, it's a eco-sports car. The engine is the 1.6 turbo we know well, but hopped up to 218bhp, driving the front wheels. The rear wheels get their own electric drive - that's the same Hybrid4 principle Pug has announced for the 3008 in 2011, and Citroen in the DS High Rider concept. In the SR1 the engine and motor combine for 313bhp and four-wheel drive.

Oh come on! Pug have made loads of good cars (mainly GTI's but still). And what about the old 504, it was like a tank. And Citroen made one of the most Radical cars ever made, the original DS.

Ok the 407 coupe actually is not too bad especially the v6 diesel its just a relaxed motorway cruiser. Peugeots are not badly built. Yes in the last few years their cars quality has been terrible with the 307 taking credit for most of it but the 406 was about the most recent example of a decent car from them it drove well, handled well, looked great because it was styled by pinifarina like all the good old peugeots such as the 405, 305, and 205 it is also a very relaible car especially the diesel i cant talk about their petrol engine because its not great. Overall though peugeot was well known for making big rugged cars that were tough and easy to fix they were very popular with farmers because of that but recently as already said they have been making crap and have been removing any reason for someone to buy one but this shows peugeot is going back to its old ways and might actually make decent handling cars that look good once again

it's absolutely fantastic if compared to all the ugly splaceship nonsense like the new focus, citroen d3, but who am i kidding ... they won't have the balls as someone said earlier ... cuz i guess it looks too much like a aston right? - well you know noone complained about the 406coupe looking like a entry level ferrari. Think about it peugeot - you'd have a nice car that turns heads again on the road... look at that grille - it's great because no car has one like this and it's hard to find your own iconic shape nowadays ... it actually reminds me of the one from 406's front bumper - a distinctive feature that made it's face so appealing

diesel peugeots are actually very reliable cars its their petrols that give all the trouble. I have a 405 gld with 450k miles on it and its still going well

I don't know so much, I've seen a old 1.3 petrol 106 rallye with 235,000 miles on it, still going strong.

am 30 and i still dream to have a 205 gti in red !!! and if i had to choose between american car and french i ll go french ! dont any of u forget that peug us to win evry paris dakar race every year with the 205 and 605 i think or was it 405 but well they did good and now well hope they ll do better

im not much of a fan of peugeot's but this one caught my eye. its a real eye catcher but depending on how it drove and the price would depend on if i bought it. unless it drove brilliantly i wouldnt buy it because it is still a peugeot.
