New world record set at Pikes Peak...

...but it wasn’t by Rhys Millen. Oh dear.

Poor old Rhys Millen. He took this fantastic looking - but ultimately disappointing- 1000bhp Hyundai prototype to Pikes Peak to try and beat a record set by Nobuhiro ‘Monster' Tajima.

Rhys wanted to beat the record, which has stood since 2007, because the person to hold it before the Japanese Suzuki driver was Rhys' dad, Rodney.

Sadly, Millen's run up the 12.42-mile course in his Hyundai PM580 took 10:09.242. Which was eight seconds off Monster's time.

But someone did beat it. Nobuhiro ‘Monster' Tajima. Again.

He managed to crack the coveted sub-ten-minute mark, posting a 9:51.278 time after climbing 4700-feet up the hill in a 910-hp Suzuki SX4. Which you can see in the video below.

The course has changed a little since 2007 - there's more tarmac on the top section - but it still comprises of 156 precipitous corners and incorporates road, gravel and dirt surfaces. And the extra hardstanding didn't seem to help Rhys...

Next year it'll change even more - in a bid to boost tourism, locals are campaigning to pave the entire the entire roadway by 2012. Which means no more dusty mentalism. Sadface.

I want to report this comment for:

They aren't paving the road to the summit to boost tourism....its because the city of Colorado Springs lost a lawsuit and must pave the road all the way now. All the dirt and gravel kicked off the road during this race ends up clogging streams and causing havoc for the ecosystem on the mountain as a whole. Not sure where TG got their incorrect info...
