The rumoured Toyota-Subaru coupe isn't exactly flying into production. But if Subaru needed any inspiration to build a proper hardcore coupe - a VW Scirocco R rival, maybe - this must be it.
This is the Subaru STI concept from Lars Martensson - an independent 3D designer who spends his weekdays creating rendering for video games - and we want it to happen.
OK, so it's hovering somewhere between a road-going coupe and a WRC contender, and there are a few elements that aren't exactly production viable - clearing the small children out of that bonnet scoop at the end of a long journey is going to prove tiresome in the long term, we fear - but who cares?
Subaru hasn't exactly been on a hot design streak recently - we're looking at you, Impreza and Tribeca - and this lovely concept, littered as it is with 80s design cues, could be just the tonic.
We're picking up subtle hints of Lotus Esprit, Lancia Stratos and Honda CRX - what can you spot in there?

I quite like it. It's utterly barking, which is precisely what Subaru needs at the moment - their current design theme is staid to say the least. Give it 300 horses and you're onto a winner. Yes.

I very much like the old fashioned way it sits on the ground - inside those chunky wheels & wheelarches. Reminds me of '70s Capris, GTAs and Escort MkI clubracers. Or the Alfa and Ferrari LM cars of the period. Very nice. I couldn't be bothered less with the rest of it though. Looks like it's been designed for a game, not for real life. A '90s game at that.

im 15 years old and want to become a car designer and this looks like the stuff i was drwing at 10 or 11 and for that reason i love it. It hasn't had to grow up which make it a breath of fresh air and a bit of a throw back to Group B rallying which people still rave about 20 years on. if only they come back and rally it.

this is just wat we need car designs are S**T nowadays everything is ruined by crash impact laws...even teh scirocco gets fat n ugly towards the back end and thts not even the part that is ruled by safety laws we will never have a beautiful car below £40k again still like this more than a scirocco tho :)

What can I see in this? Hmmn let me think.... Probably the Citroen Saxo brigade - no, not the old ladies who use Saxo's as shoppers. I mean the tastless chav's who add plastic bumpers, power bulges, flip paint and whale tail's to "improve" performance. This car has absolutely no class. A classy car will still draw gasps of admiration 20, 30 or 40 years after it's inception. To like this you'd really need to be in touch with your inner schoolboy, in which case, shouldn't it also have eight exhaust pipes on each side, and doors that rotate into the chassis under the seats?

Why does a squashed hatchback qualify these days as a coupe? That's all this is (quite a nice looking one mind), and that's all the Brera, Scirocco and Ibiza SC are too. It's stupid.

I reckon that if that car went into production, the design would be toned down a bit (as is usually the case with concept cars) and THEN it would be a good looking car. The front end is a bit extreme!
